Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension Information
Academic Difficulty to Academic Success Program
The College of Architecture and Design's Student Services Office has created the Academic Difficulty to Academic Success program, in order to educate, support, and empower students who find themselves on Academic Notice/Warning, Academic Probation, or Academic Suspension. It is the goal of the Student Services Office to provide information and resources to these students to help them identify areas of improvement and strategies for success both academically and personally.
Academic Notice/Academic Warning
If you are a first time in college (FTIC) student who has earned less than 2.00 semester GPA (Below a C average) in your first long semester ( i.e., Fall or Spring) of enrollment at UH, you will be placed on Academic Notice, which is also referred to as Academic Warning. The purpose of this action is to identify a potential academic problem that requires your attention.
This is not probation, and you CANNOT be suspended at this time.
Academic Notice/Academic Warning applies only to your first semester as an incoming freshman. If you do not earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 during your second semester, you will be placed on academic probation.
CoAD majors on Academic Notice/Warning will be required to schedule an academic advising appointment with their assigned advisor.
A hold is placed on the student's account when student is placed on Academic Warning. This hold prevents registration in future semester. This hold is lifted once the student completes all Academic Warning requirements.
Academic Probation
If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.00 (and you are not a first-semester freshman with 29 hours or less) during your academic career, you will be placed on academic probation. This serves as a warning so that you can modify your commitments and improve your study habits.
CoAD majors on Academic Probation will be required to schedule an academic advising appointment with their assigned advisor.
A hold is placed on the student's account when student is placed on Academic Probation. This hold prevents registration in future semester. This hold is lifted once the student completes all Academic Probation requirements.
Academic Suspension
If you are on academic probation and your semester GPA falls below 2.00, you will be placed on Academic Suspension.
While you are on suspension at UH, you cannot enroll in classes here.
- First suspension: Student must sit out the next full semester, either the fall or the spring. Summer does not count as a full semester. CoAD majors should not expect to be readmitted to CoAD.
- Second suspension: Student must sit out 1 calendar year (12 months). CoAD majors receiving a second suspension should not expect to be readmitted to the CoAD.
- Third suspension: Student will not be readmitted to UH. No appeal is available for a third suspension.
The CoAD does not grant readmission during the summer semester. Please refer to the Readmission from Suspension into the College of Architecture and Design information sheet for more information.
Academic Difficulty to Academic Success Program Requirements
In addition to scheduling a required academic advising appointment (schedule online via your myUH account or by calling the Student Services Office at 713-743-3463), students on academic notice/warning and academic probation must complete one of the following two options:
1. Academic Warning, Probation, & Suspension Presentation & Online Quiz
2. Habit Theory & Syllabi Matrix
If you do not complete one of the two options and schedule your required academic advising/probation appointment by the deadline, a HOLD will be placed on your record which will prevent you from enrolling in future courses.
