Congratulations to the Architecture + Design Alumni Awards 2024 Winners!

The University of Houston Architecture and Design Alumni Association and the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design are excited to celebrate another exceptional group of accomplished alumni award winners.

The jury, consisting of David S. Dalton (B.Arch. '04), Megan McCoy (M.Arch. '08), and Carlyle Yarbough (B.S. I.D. '15), accepted the challenge of selecting the 2024 award winners for five categories: Distinguished Alumni Award, Leadership Alumni Award, Successful Entrepreneur Award, Innovator Alumni Award, and Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

The winners will be celebrated at the UH Architecture + Design Alumni Association Kick-Off on September 26 at the Architecture Center Houston.

Distinguished Alumni Award Winner: Amanda Tullos (B.Arch. '03)

Distinguished Alumni Award Winner: Amanda Tullos, FAIA, LFA, LEED AP (B.Arch. '03)

Driven to create a profitable regenerative legacy for people, nature, and the built environment, Amanda Tullos brings an in-depth understanding of architecture and proven success at facilitating some of the most sustainable projects in the nation. Core competencies include:

  • Strong collaborative spirit and an inclusive solution-generating approach

As founder and principal of GreeNexus Consulting, Amanda’s talent and passion direct the sustainable design efforts for a variety of project types, including higher education, retail, commercial office, civic, multi-family, and municipal facilities. 

Amanda leverages the expertise of project team members in a collective pursuit of holistic strategies best suited to the project goals. The result is award-winning projects and more than 15 million square feet of LEED-certified space. 

Amanda’s design sensibilities and advocacy in the green building movement make her an active participant in the Texas and southern regional sustainable community. Amanda has served as the co-chair for the AIA Houston Committee on the Environment (COTE) and the COTE regional team leader for the Gulf Coast and Southeast regions. A recognized sustainability expert, Amanda performs third-party verification and influences policy changes. She wrote Appendix R to the Building Code for the City of Houston for guidelines clarifying materials’ reuse.

She works primarily on inception projects, specializing in integrative charettes and regenerative design. She currently works closely with her project managers to assist in the development of successful and sustainable buildings.

Leadership Alumni Award: Jeanette Shaw (B.Arch. '01)

Leadership Alumni Award Winner: Jeanette Shaw, AIA, RID, LEED AP (B.Arch. '01)

Associate, Director of Quality and Sustainability | Powers Brown Architecture

Jeanette Shaw is a respected professional with over 20 years of experience and holds licenses in both architecture and interior design. As a project manager and technical director, Jeanette was responsible for managing the creation of many iconic and award-winning projects published in state and national magazines, including Arabella, a 34-story condominium, and Post HTX in collaboration with OMA, an adaptive re-use project in downtown Houston.

As an architect, Jeanette is a pragmatic proponent of technical training and skills and seeks to educate the industry about the value of technical quality in project delivery. Over the last several years, Jeanette presented at several national conferences, including the AIA National Conference where she educated architects about the value of quality programs. In addition, she will be presenting at the 2024 TxA Conference about how to bridge design to construction using technical documentation. Jeanette is also involved in multiple organizations that encourage collaboration between architects and general contractors to improve quality, including the Houston AIA/AGC Committee and the national DCX/Construction Quality Executives Council, where she currently holds the President position.

Along with all of her achievements in the industry on both a local and national level, Jeanette is also responsible for creating a robust internal program for education within Powers Brown Architecture. PBA is an AIA CES provider, and Jeanette has personally created and certified over twenty training courses, which are given live to over 100 global employees twice a month. She remains one of the most prolific mentors to all of PBA staff, including many University of Houston graduates. She also volunteers to help the AIAS organization at the Hines College by performing facility tours at Post HTX and office tours at PBA.

Successful Entrepreneur Award Winner: Geoffrey Lyon (B.Arch. '97)

Successful Entrepreneur Award Winner: Geoffrey Lyon, Assoc. AIA (B.Arch. '97)

After seven years of practicing traditional architecture, Geoffrey Lyon launched G. Lyon Photography, Inc. A technical master of the craft, Geoff’s artistry combines with his architectural knowledge to capture the craftsmanship and design of each project photographed.

Geoff holds a Bachelor of Architecture with a photography minor from the Hines College. He also holds an FAA Section 107 Aerial Drone Pilot License and is a member of SMPS Houston and AIA Houston. 

During the pandemic, Geoff grew G. Lyon Photography by expanding from a solo practice with assistant support to include a business principal, a drone pilot, and an AEC headshots and events photographer. Three out of the four are UH Alums.

Geoff’s photos are published in Architectural RecordTexas ArchitectCiteThe Architect’s NewspaperArchitect MagazineArch Daily, and countless other publications and books. His images are regularly viewable in marketing materials for the City of Houston by Visit Houston, the Greater Houston Partnership, and at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

A Canadian-born Texan, Geoff proudly calls Houston home, faithfully supports US and Canadian soccer, and more importantly, all the Houston sports teams.

Innovator Alumni Award Winner: C.R. Betirri (B.Arch. '07)

Innovator Alumni Award Winner: C.R. Betirri (B.Arch. '07)

Founder | Betirri Creative, LLC • Founder, President | Goal Park Foundation

Born in Puebla, Mexico, Betirri is a local artist based in Houston, Texas. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Architecture in 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts in 2009, both from the University of Houston. His brand and signature body of work express the crossover between art and sports with a distinctive surrealistic style allowing the viewer to explore the identity and impact of sports in current society.

His portfolio includes hundreds of paintings and over thirty murals. He has acquired international recognition through the exhibit of his art around the world, including the last three FIFA World Cups (Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar in 2022).

He is passionate about helping the local community through his philanthropic efforts, including his initiative to enhance seven blocks of the Columbia Tap trail through sports and art activities, calling it Goal Park. Moreover, he has donated hundreds of artworks for charity and fundraiser events since 2012.

Betirri is the organizer of Tour de Mural which is an annual bike tour around his murals in Houston since 2019. He has been the official artist of the Lamborghini Festival in Houston since 2014 and a TEDx speaker in 2022. His latest accomplishment is the design and construction of his iconic pink gallery/studio in East Downtown Houston with the vision to host classes and events motivating younger generations to pursue their artistic endeavors.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award: Kevin Hai Pham (B.S. '16)

Outstanding Young Alumni Award: Kevin Hai Pham (B.S. '16)

Project Designer | Space Exploration Design • Adjunct Faculty | Columbia GSAPP

Kevin Hai Pham is a designer and adjunct assistant professor at Columbia GSAPP. Currently, he is located in New York City, where he works as a project designer at Space Exploration Design and freelances for various projects and engagements around the city. At Columbia University, he teaches design studios in the Master of Architecture program, where his studios currently are centered on topics of alternative forms of public space, queer heterotopias, and the architectures of nightlife. 

Previously, he has worked as a designer with firms across the United States and Europe, including Bjarke Ingels Group and Snøhetta, where he was exposed to projects of myriad scales — from small-scale installations, residences, and interiors; to cultural institutions, museums, and public libraries; and to larger, urban master plans. He wrote his thesis on the spatial infrastructures of youth nightlife networks in Amsterdam, conducted independent research on the ad hoc architectures of post-industrial Berlin’s renegade rave scene, and assisted artists in Paris through the Cité International des Arts à Paris. Through NHDM, he also participated in the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2023 and the Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism in 2019. He has lectured, been an invited critic, or taught in varying capacities at Columbia University, New York University, University of Houston, Boston Architectural College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Austin’s South by Southwest.

Kevin received his Master of Architecture with honors from Columbia University and his Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture and Bachelor of Arts in French Literature from the University of Houston, summa cum laude. Following the completion of his graduate studies, Kevin was awarded the Lowenfish Memorial Prize, the Building Technologies Honor Award, and the William Kinne Fellows Traveling Prize for postgraduate study.

DAVID S. DALTON, AIA, NCARB ('04)

DAVID S. DALTON, AIA, NCARB (B.Arch. '04)

Executive Vice President, Director, Central Texas, Kirksey Architecture

As an Executive Vice President at Kirksey, David has helped grow Kirksey Architecture and expanded their presence in Texas. In 2018, he helped lead the expansion of the office in Austin and serves as a Director of the Central Texas market. David’s projects have won multiple awards, including an IIDA Interior Design Award for Sustainability, LEED Platinum certifications, and featured in Texas Architect magazine. The breadth of David’s professional and community service accomplishments continues to grow.

In 2021, David became a Board Member for the University of Houston Austin Alumni Association to stay connected to his hometown and his alma mater. Additionally, David has a long relationship with The Ability Experience, a non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness on behalf of people with disabilities through a variety of programs and shared experiences. He has participated in multiple cycling events hosted by the organization and recently completed over 900 mile-long cycling trek throughout Austin in 2020 during the pandemic and a 950 miles across the state of Florida in 2022 raising over $15,000 between both events.

Megan McCoy graduated from the University of Houston with her Master of Architecture in 2008. After working abroad, she returned to Texas and joined Page in 2011. At Page, she has worked as a Project Architect, Senior Project Manager and Studio Leader, overseeing a diverse range of large and complex projects, both stateside and abroad.

Megan is now the operations director for Page, the largest and most enduring architecture and engineering firm in Austin. She oversees the day-to-day logistics of the 260+ person office, where she manages business operations, staffing, and comprehensive regional implementation of the firm’s operational goals. Megan’s mantra of ‘continuous improvement’ is a north star as the organization grows and evolves. Her driven yet humble approach to leadership has a transformative way of motivating staff and elevating the collective. Megan cites team fulfillment and client satisfaction as her greatest measures of professional success.

Megan initiated the local AIA Women in Architecture Committee, serving as the co-chair for its inaugural year in 2018. She was recognized as a 2022 Austin Business Journal Women in Business Nominee. In addition to university speaking engagements and student mentoring, Megan shepherds Page’s Meals on Wheels volunteer program and supports Ronald McDonald House Charities.

CARLYLE YARBOUGH (B.S. I.D. '15)

Senior Industrial Designer, Verizon

Carlyle is an industrial designer with nearly a decade of experience designing and developing products from conception to market launch. His professional journey spans diverse settings, from small start-ups to mid-sized tech firms, culminating in his current role as a senior industrial designer at Verizon in New York City. There, he specializes in hardware design within the home & connectivity category. Throughout his career, Carlyle has earned accolades for his contributions to consumer electronics, automotive accessories, and smart home technologies, with numerous award-winning designs.

A proud graduate of the University of Houston Hines College, Carlyle attributes his foundation in industrial design to his alma mater, where he refined his skills and fostered a commitment to innovation and excellence. Since graduating, Carlyle remains dedicated to the industrial design program and nurturing the next generation of students, actively engaging through mentorship.

Carlyle is passionate about crafting impactful messages through both physical and digital design across diverse spaces and platforms. He believes in leveraging varied perspectives and creative inspiration to deliver distinctive, meaningful solutions.
