SAT — Use only the initials in referring to the previously designated Scholastic Aptitude Test or the Scholastic Assessment Test. Example: The students scored above average on the SAT.

scholarship and fellowship — Only capitalize the words that are part of the official name of a scholarship or fellowship; scholarship or fellowship may or may not be included in that name.

seasons — Lowercase spring, summer, fall, winter and derivatives such as springtime unless part of a formal name.

semesters — see academic year

semicolon — A semicolon is used to link related independent clauses (each with a subject and a verb). see Punctuation Primer

state names— Spell out in the body of a story, whether standing alone or in conjunction with a city.

state — Lowercase in all state of constructions and when used as an adjective to specify a level of jurisdiction. Typically, “state of Texas” is used when referring to government offices or organizations.

STEM— Acceptable on first reference for science, technology, engineering and math, but spell out the full phrase shortly thereafter.

syllabus, syllabuses— per Webster’s New World College Dictionary syllabi is an acceptable alternative for pl. of syllabus.
