UH Report Finds Houston-Area Intimate Partner Violence Homicides Doubled in Three Years
To help turn the tide of intimate partner violence homicides, the study authors recommend significant community investment in expanded domestic violence infrastructure coordination and staffing. The Institute for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality's findings are detailed in a February 2023 Report to the Community.
Study Finds Video Game Playing Causes No Harm to Young Children’s Cognitive Abilities
Despite old fears that bad effects follow excessive video game playing or questionable game choices, researchers found those factors mattered little, if any, in children’s brain health. The bad news? Video games assumed to be effective learning tools showed no meaningful effects, either.

Now a UH researcher is reporting a new method to control the growth of ammonium urate crystals, the substance known to cause kidney stones in dolphins, and the findings may not only help dolphins but may also have implications for the pharmaceutical industry.

Texans Back Easing State Restrictions on Marijuana
Attitudes about marijuana use, both medicinal and recreational, are changing. Previously thought too dangerous to allow, acceptance of marijuana use is gaining ground across the state, even among conservative circles. But not everyone’s eager. A significant minority of Texans prefer to leave the state’s marijuana laws right where they are, the new survey shows.
