Staff Council Awards

The Staff Council Awards recognize employee excellence at the University of Houston.
Nominees must demonstrate a positive attitude that encompasses qualities in alignment with Staff Council values: Service, Training, Advocacy, Networking, Dedication, and Sustainability (STANDS).
Recipients from each category will receive an engraved award, a special acknowledgment at a Staff Council General Meeting. In addition, recipients will be featured in the Staff Connect newsletter and Staff Council social media.
2025 Nomination Application Deadline: April 4th at 5 PM
UH Nominees must meet the following criteria:
- Must be employed in a full-time, benefits-eligible (1.0 FTE) position at UH Main, UH at Katy, or UH at Sugar Land campus for at least one (1) year as of March 1st of this year. Nominations for the Rookie of the Year award are exempt from these criteria.
- Nominated with a completed form and two additional statements of support for your nominee.
Please note: All achievements must be accomplished in the last twelve (12) months.
To be considered for awards, nominations must be submitted by April 4th at 5:00 p.m.
Staff may be considered for multiple awards but may only be eligible to win in one category. If you have any questions please contact scawards@uh.edu.
- Complete and submit the Staff Council Awards Nomination Form. Log in to MS Forms using your Cougarnet credentials.
- Optional: Nominators may submit additional statements of support, letter of recommendation, or other accolades in support of the nomination. These items may be uploaded at the end of the form or sent to scawards@uh.edu before April 4th, at 5:00 pm. Supporting documentation received after this deadline will not be considered.

Staff Council Awards
Team Excellence Recognition
Teams nominated for this award have demonstrated outstanding performance and results
due to group achievement. A team may work together to deliver exceptional customer
service, cost savings, time savings, maintaining high safety records, combining talents
of traditionally separate units, creative ideas, community service, actively demonstrating
a willingness to encourage teamwork in the workplace, or etc.
Nominees for the Rookie of the Year Award must be employed for one (1) year or less at the University of Houston full time benefits eligible, without any prior years of service at the university. Nominees for this award should have a remarkable ability to adjust to a new work environment while demonstrating outstanding enthusiasm and a high level of energy. The ideal nominee displays characteristics of taking initiative and being self-motivated.
Optimism Award
The nominee consistently handles unusual or difficult challenges and/or job assignments
with professionalism and a positive attitude.
High Performance Award
Nominees for this award consistently go above and beyond what is required and expected
in performing job duties and responsibilities.
Impact Award
Nominees for this award have made a major impact on an important university event,
function, or service by developing, revising, or implementing a system, tool, process,
initiative or program within their department or across the university.
Inspiring Leadership
Nominees for this award are in a supervisory role and provide inspiring leadership
to employees. The nominee consistently exemplifies significant leadership skills such
as the ability to lead, guide, and motivate employee(s) by developing employee(s)
talents. They are known for their leadership-by-example and for the ways they engage,
empower and promote the achievements of colleagues.
Collaborator Award
Nominees for this award work effectively with others to produce positive results.
This individual encourages diverse views by fostering partnerships across multiple
levels of the organization. They build consensus in decision-making, cooperative problem-solving,
knowledge sharing, or information contributing to group success.
UH Spirit Award (New)
This award recognizes an individual who best embodies and embraces the spirit of the
university. This individual demonstrates cougar pride while helping students and creates
community camaraderie through their loyalty to the university. The recipient of this
award lives out the mission of the university in all aspects of their work.
