2023 Coog Cribs Contest
Hey, Coogs! The Coog Cribs Competition is back! Do you have the coolest room on campus? Did you and your roommates deck out your living room? Enter the 2023 Coog Cribs Competition to see how you stack up, win prizes and most importantly, bragging rights.
What is the Challenge?
The Coog Cribs Challenge is an annual room design competition available to all on-campus residents. Residents can enter their room into any combination of the four judging categories. Winners will receive gift cards, prize packs and a feature on Student Housing & Residential Life’s social media.
Contest Categories
On-campus residents are welcome to enter their room or shared living room into any combination of the following categories:
Home Sweet Home
This is a judges’ choice category. We want to see what makes your space uniquely YOU. Submissions will be evaluated based on use of space, use of color and reflection of personality.
Cougar Pride
“Cougar Pride” is a judges’ choice category. Show us how your room embodies the Cougar Spirit. Whether it’s UH colors, Houston memorabilia or Weeks of Welcome freebies, we want to see rooms that shout UH. Submissions will be evaluated based on commitment to the category, creativity, and use of space.
Best Living Room
“Best Living Room” is a judges’ choice category. Your common area is THE space for your fellow Coogs to hang out. If your living space clearly reflects a team effort and is frequestly visited by friends, step into the spotlight. This category is for UH residents who share a common living area (Bayou Oaks, Cougar Place, The Quad and University Lofts). Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity, use of space and reflection of group interests.
People’s Choice
Winners in this category will be determined by social media engagement. The People’s Choice submissions will be posted on Student Housing & Residential Life’s Facebook page and Instagram stories (contestants will receive an email when submissions are posted). The room that gets the most combined likes between platforms by 8 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 will win. Please indicate in the file name or in the “additional comments” box which picture you would like to have posted on our social media channels.
How to Enter
Residents can enter the 2023 Coog Cribs Challenge by submitting 1-3 photos of their room or living room at the following form. Entrants must first agree to all of the Coog Cribs Challenge guidelines before submitting.

Coog Cribs Challenge Guidelines
By entering this contest, you agree to the following terms and conditions listed below:
- All residents (including Student Housing & Residential Life student staff) of the following Student Housing & Residential Life residences are eligible to enter this contest: Cougar Village I, Cougar Village II, Moody Towers, The Quad, Cougar Place, University Lofts.
- You agree to the Photograph and Publicity Release policy included in Student Housing & Residential Life’s community standards: Residents of Student Housing & Residential Life give University of Houston Student Housing & Residential Life permission to record their participation and appearance on videotape, audiotape, film photograph or any other medium; use the resident’s name, likeness, voice and biographical material in connection with such recordings; exhibit or distribute such recordings in whole or in part without restrictions or limitation for any legal purpose, including educational or promotional purposes, which University of Houston deems appropriate. University of Houston can copyright images and recordings in its own name to publish, to market, and to assign without consideration, compensation or report to the resident. The full release can be viewed on the University Marketing and Communications website.
- Contestants consent to use of their decorated space for photography and videography as requested by Student Housing & Residential Life. All requested photography and videography sessions will be supervised by Student Housing & Residential Life staff and will be scheduled in agreement with all occupants of the resident’s assigned space.
- Entrants decorating their space with prohibited items will be automatically disqualified. See the Pre-Arrival Checklist in the Cougar Move-in Guide for a complete list of prohibited items.
- Only one entry per bedroom. If living in a shared room, both roommates must agree to participate in the contest. Suitemates/those in the same apartment do not need to agree to participate unless you are submitting a living room entry.
- Each individual in the winning roommate pair or apartment will win a prize pack. If an individual wins in a bedroom category and the living room category, they will only receive one prize pack.
- Your submission must include 1-3 unedited photos of your room. No Instagram photos, photos with filters or collages will be accepted. Only bedroom and living room submissions will be accepted. No bathroom photos, please.
- All entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Contestant photos for the People’s Choice category will be posted on the Student Housing & Residential Life Facebook page and on our Instagram stories. The top “liked” room will win this category.
- A panel of judges will choose winners for the Cougar Pride, Best Living Room and Home Sweet Home categories based on creativity, use of color, theme and overall design.
- Student Housing & Residential Life professional staff are not eligible to participate.
- Entrants must be following Student Housing & Residential life on social media to be eligible to win.
- The submission form will close at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17. No submissions or edits will be accepted after this point.
