Scholarship applicants:

• Should be age 30 or older and/or among the first generation in family to attend college.
• Must have declared a major in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with a preference given to math majors.
• Must be enrolled in at least six hours of coursework.
• Must maintain a 3.25 GPA.

Special Essay Instructions:

In addition to furnishing the information specified on the scholarship application, applicants should include information about how they qualify as a “nontraditional student,” as defined in the donor’s biographical sketch below.

Joseph Schatz was a professor of mathematics at the University of Houston from 1972 to 1998. He particularly liked helping students unlikely to study mathematics overcome their fears and learn to love the field. Dr. Schatz had a special rapport with nontraditional students, including those who were returning to school in midlife, were the first generation in their family to attend college, and those from other cultures.
