Available On-campus Resources for Academic Success

Hey, Coogs! Student success is a key factor in Student Housing & Residential Life's (SHRL) Residential Engagement Model. Our educational priority is for residents to engage in learning experiences that promote academic success and connection to a diverse community.

M.D. Anderson Library
The M.D. Anderson Library is accessible to all University of Houston (UH) students, faculty and staff with their CougarCard, is the campus's main library. Offering various resources, including study spaces, research guides, videos, printing stations, and equipment for checkout, the library is a valuable asset for your academic journey. Center for Academic Support and Assessment (CASA)
CASA offers tutoring for mathematics students and proctored testing for students in all subject areas. Originally designed by the Department of Mathematics for exclusive use, CASA has expanded to offer testing for students in all classes. With over 21,000 students using CASA for proctored testing each semester, it is viewed as a key resource for academic success. Learn more about CASA here: https://www.uh.edu/casa/.

Learning Advancements for Undergraduate Cougars of Houston (LAUNCH)
LAUNCH, part of the UH Undergraduate Student Success Center, offers peer tutoring for over 100 courses, success workshops, individual academic coaching and printable resources to aid concentration, note taking, memory, time management and test anxiety. UH Writing Center
The UH Writing Center provides services to students, faculty and staff to support effective writing practices across campus. Students can access writing consultations in-person or online, in addition to helpful videos and online resources. You can schedule an appointment online using the Writing Center website: https://uh.edu/writing-center/.

Faculty in Residence (FIR)
The FIR program is a SHRL initiative that was implemented to strengthen the connection between students' academic and residential learning experiences. Faculty members from various  disciplines live on campus, working closely with  SHRL staff members  to provide opportunities for residents to interact with professors outside the classroom, further supporting student learning, engagement and success. Community Mentor (CM)
A CM is a student staff member who, under the supervision of a Residential Life Coordinator (RLC), serves as a peer mentor, providing advocacy, intervention, mentorship and support to residential students. The CM position is also responsible for advising the Hall Council for their assigned residence hall. Get to know your CM by visiting your building’s front desk or by reaching out to your RLC.

Student Housing & Residential Life Announces New Associate Director of Residential Life

Student Housing & Residential Life is pleased to announce Jarayon Jackson as the associate director of Residential Life. In this role, Jackson will manage the unit’s assistant directors and residential life coordinators to cultivate programming and engagement opportunities for campus residents.

Jackson joined the department in November, having previously served as an assistant director for summer operations/university housing at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. Additionally, her experience in higher education includes roles at North Carolina Central University, Mississippi Valley State University and Middle Tennessee State University.

“As the new associate director of Residential Life, I am excited to contribute to the environment of student housing at UH,” said Jackson. “I hope my energy will be contagious while I assist SHRL staff and residents with growing and becoming positive change agents in the university, community and world.”

Jackson holds a master’s degree in education, administration and supervision from Middle Tennessee State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College.

SHRL FIR Hosts Holiday Gathering for Students

During the Winter Break, Cougar Village I Faculty-in-Residence Melody Li., Ph.D., hosted a gathering for several students who remained on campus for the holidays. The event took place in Li’s on campus apartment and featured homestyle Hot Pot barbecue and karaoke.

“I once was an international student, and I felt most lonely during holidays like Christmas when other domestic students went home,” Li said. “I offered to make food and celebrate with those who cannot go home so that we could celebrate together."


Resident Advisor Recruitment

Looking for a rewarding on-campus job experience? Apply to be a Resident Advisor (RA) with Student Housing & Residential Life!

RAs are a critical part of the University of Houston experience, working to support community development, student success and relationship building. Positions are available in SEVEN residential communities for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The RA application period opend on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, and runs through Monday, Jan. 22, 2024.

For a more in-depth look at the RA position, you are encouraged to attend an information session. The final information session (virtual) for the RA application cycle is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Many times, a resident is the first to encounter a maintenance issue within their residence hall. When that happens, you can easily report the issue to UH Facilities Services through text message, email, phone call or by using the FIXIT icon in AccessUH .
