Alex Beattie Assistant Dean of Students

Alex Beattie joined the Dean of Students Office in September 2024 as an Assistant Dean of Students. As part of his role, Mr. Beattie serves as a hearing officer within the student conduct process, hearing and investigating a complex docket of individual and organizational student conduct cases. Mr. Beattie is passionate about counseling and advising students of campus-related problems, spreading awareness of behavior/harm to the community, along with providing solutions that benefit students' well-being, personal & professional development, and encouraging students to positively contribute to their community and to make a difference in the world. Along with his student conduct responsibilities, Mr. Beattie is also responsible for educating and organizing the University Hearing Boards to hear cases. Prior to joining the Dean of Students at UH, Mr. Beattie was an Assistant Director of Assessment and Student Conduct in Student Housing and Residence Life (SHRL) at the University of Houston, and helped create trainings and an accountability tool for tracking and updating Maxient Student Conduct Cases.

Prior to his arrival at the University of Houston, Mr. Beattie, spent 3 years at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), in the Office of Student Integrity (OSI) within the Dean of Students, as a Student Conduct Coordinator and then as an Assistant Director of Student Integrity. Mr. Beattie's responsibilities focused on investigating individual, organizational, and academic student conduct cases and assigning/handling well-ness checks for Housing and Residence Life at Georgia Tech. Mr. Beattie started as a Student Conduct Coordinator in May 2021, handling individual, organizational, and academic student conduct cases for the Office of Student Integrity. Along with his responsibilities as a Student Conduct Coordinator, Mr. Beattie was a liaison with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) and an investigator for organizational conduct for fraternities and sororities. In February 2023, Mr. Beattie transitioned to the Assistant Director for the Office of Student Integrity (OSI), received specialized training in investigations and as a Level 5 Maxient User. helped audit and resolve over 300 student conduct cases for Housing and Residence Life, as well as built a multi-step training program and accountability system for hearing officers to process and hear cases at Georgia Tech. Mr. Beattie was able to ensure that student conduct cases were completed in a timely manner and in compliance with department and university policies. Mr. Beattie also served as an advisor to the Honor Advisory Council, a student group dedicated to educating the Georgia Tech community about the Academic and Student Code of Conduct, and promoting strategies to prevent academic and non-academic violations. During Mr. Beattie's time at Georgia Tech, he was able to teach over 250 RAs how to write incident reports using a Maxient Incident Report form, onboarded, and educated over 30 professional staff members on how to use Maxient at a Level 4 user rating, and educated professional staff members on investigative techniques and questioning practices.

Prior to Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Mr. Beattie was hired as Residence Life Coordinator at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) main campus in University Park, PA from 2017-2021. Mr. Beattie began his career as a Residence Life Coordinator in Nittany Apartments and Suites, then transitioned to South Proper community in January 2018 to May 2019, and then back to Nittany Apartments and Suites. During his time as a Residence Life Coordinator, Mr. Beattie was able to participate on an on-duty rotation for approximately 5,000 student population on campus, focus on conducting wellness checks and connecting students to campus partners that could provide support and outreach for issues of mental health, substance usage, and/or personal/professional challenges students might be facing in their lives. Mr. Beattie was also a faculty member during his time at Pennsylvania State University and instructed and facilitated the Higher Education Leadership Class (HIED 302) for 21 student leaders and prospective Resident Assistant candidates for the Fall 2018 semester.

Mr. Beattie earned dual Bachelor of Art degrees in Political Science (B.A.) and Criminal Justice (B.A.) from the University of Dayton in 2010. Mr. Beattie also attended St. Petersburg College All-State Center, in St. Petersburg, FL, and is a graduate of Police Recruiting Class #177 of April 2011. Mr. Beattie graduated with a Master's of Science in Education Degree (M.S.E) in College Student Personnel in May 2017. Mr. Beattie's Master's Thesis "The Social Media Campus Intervention," a qualitative study focused on asking the question "How do undergraduate students make decisions about what is or is not appropriate to post to social media platforms?" Mr. Beattie's research focused on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), and how students think about and evaluate the appropriateness of their social media postings. As Mr. Beattie was pursuing his graduate studies at the University of Dayton, he also served as a Graduate Assistant in Housing and Residence Life, as a Residence Coordinator for the South Student Neighborhood from July 2016 to May 2017. Mr. Beattie was awarded the 2017 Graduate Assistant Award for Scholarship and Service for his Master's Thesis and work as a Residence Life Coordinator in the South Student Neighborhood. As a Graduate Assistant, Mr. Beattie was able to really develop a passion about talking and spreading awareness to how a student's behaviors could potential affect their development, their community, and their future. Mr. Beattie uses his observations and life experiences to share his guidance and support students in achieving their success both in and out of the classroom at the University of Houston.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Beattie enjoys spending time with his Mini-Golden Doodle and routing on Ohio State Buckeyes, Dayton Flyers, and Cleveland Browns. In his free time, Mr. Beattie enjoys going to concerts and listening to music, as well as working out, rucking, hiking, traveling, exploring new cities, spending time at the beach, and searching for the perfect sunset.
