University of Houston Statement on Texas Senate Bill 17 and Anti-DEI FAQ, Including Resources for Collaboration with Student Organizations

Dear University of Houston Recruiting Partners,

In response to inquiries regarding Texas Senate Bill 17 and its implications on our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), we would like to provide clarity on our stance, policies, and resources available for collaboration.

Texas Senate Bill 17, as it pertains to employers and job postings targeted towards specific racial or gender identities, aligns with the University of Houston's steadfast commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment for all students. We believe in providing equal opportunities for every member of our community, regardless of their racial or gender identity. You can find a summary of this SB17 bill prepared by our General Counsel here, and full text is available here.

The University of Houston unequivocally opposes any form of discrimination in the workplace, including job postings that target individuals based on their racial or gender identity. Our commitment to diversity extends beyond the campus, encompassing all aspects of our community, including employment opportunities.

As an educational institution, we remain dedicated to cultivating an environment that promotes a rich tapestry of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We firmly believe that a diverse and inclusive campus enhances the learning experience for all students and prepares them for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

To align with the principles of Texas Senate Bill 17, the University of Houston will actively discourage and take measures to prevent employers from posting job listings that target specific racial or gender identities, such as African American, Latinx, Asian American, or women only. We are committed to fostering an inclusive job market that values the skills, qualifications, and potential of every individual, irrespective of their background.

To further support these efforts, we encourage employers to collaborate with specific student organizations dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion. These organizations serve as valuable resources for connecting with a diverse pool of talent, understanding various perspectives, and building a workplace that celebrates differences.

The UH Career Services offices, in conjunction with these student organizations, will facilitate networking events, leadership development programs, workshops, and information sessions to foster meaningful connections between employers and students. This collaborative approach will not only enhance the recruitment process but also contribute to the creation of a more inclusive job market.

For information on specific student organizations and upcoming events, please refer to the University of Houston's DEI FAQ Resource Guide, on page 11, question 36, and your career services contact.

Additionally, our Equal Opportunity Services offices is always available to assist with any inquiries related to these policies and collaborative opportunities.

We remain dedicated to upholding the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Houston and will continue working towards creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
