SNPhA Shines on National Stage   

UH Among Top 3 'Large' Chapters in U.S., First Runner-up in Interprofessional Competition; 3 Members Earn National, Regional Honors

The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) UH Chapter was recognized among the top chapters in the U.S., while three individual members secured national and regional leadership positions and awards, at the 2014 SNPhA National Meeting July 18-21 in Arlington, Va.

The UH Chapter was among the finalists for the Rite Aid/SNPhA Chapter Excellence Award in the Large Chapter category (marking the fourth time in the past five years the chapter has been among the top contenders for the award). The UH chapter's activities over the 2013-14 academic year included members providing more than 4,300 wellness screenings and/or immunizations at health fairs throughout the Greater Houston area in partnership with nonprofit organizations, community/retail pharmacies, and students in health profession programs at other institutions.      

The chapter also was recognized as First Runner-up in the Rite Aid Interprofessional Health Fair competition, which involved student-created videos showcasing collaborative health-related outreach and education activities and events. The UH submission can be viewed on YouTube here.

Among individuals honors at the meeting, UHCOP students Patrick Maranon and Rene Banzuelo were appointed to serve as the National Diabetes Chair and Region IV Facilitator, respectively, on the 2014-15 SNPhA national board. It’s the fourth consecutive year in which two UHCOP students have served at the national level in SNPhA.

In addition, past chapter president Ashley Tran was honored as the recipient of the $2,000 Region 4 Walmart/SNPhA Future Leader Award Scholarship and as a finalist for the national level scholarship.

The chapter also had three two-person teams – Leslie Opara and Jeffrey Ibarguen, Rose Cherian and Mahwish Yasin, and Hang Mui and Rene Banzuelo – compete in the SNPhA Clinical Skills competition. In addition, students David Pham, Boxin Xu and Tracey Thomas participated in the Target Innovation Workshop.
