Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist, Alumna Martinez Joins UHCOP Faculty in RGV Pharm.D. Satellite Program

June 1 — UH College of Pharmacy recently welcomed back alumna Briget R. Martinez, Pharm.D. ('07), as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research and a member of the Rio Grande Valley Pharm.D. Satellite Program.

Martinez joins UHCOP from DHR Health based in Edinburg, where she is maintaining her practice in general pediatrics and pediatric/neonatal intensive care, including transitions of care. Martinez also will serve as residency program director for a newly affiliated ambulatory care-focused DHR Health/UHCOP postgraduate pharmacy practice residency (PGY1) program. 

martinez photoIn addition to pediatrics, her academic and research interests include health informatics and technology and preceptor/professional development. Her research has been published in the International Journal of Pharmacovigilance, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Cancer Detection & Prevention, and she is a volunteer pharmacist on medical mission trips to Guatemala.

Martinez's previous clinical and community practice experience includes positions at Kelsey Seybold Clinic (where she was named the clinic's Cancer Services Pharmacist of the Year in 2015), Methodist Texsan ICU Pharmacy in San Antonio, Woman's Hospital of Texas Pharmacy in Houston, and Target Corp. in McAllen as well as a previous position with DHR Health in its Women's Hospital/Cancer Center. 

In addition to her UHCOP Pharm.D. degree, Martinez earned a B.S. in biology from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and a Health Informatics Certificate from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Bilingual in English/Spanish, Martinez has been a pharmacy preceptor since 2008.
