Graduation Awards Event Recognizes Students for Outstanding Academic, Experiential and Volunteer Performance

UH College of Pharmacy and select student organizations presented awards to several graduating students at the Class of 2018 Graduation Awards Reception May 9 at the UH Hilton Hotel.

The event is an annual tradition of the college to recognize students for exceptional scholarship, leadership, service and exhibition of pharmacy practice skills such as patient counseling and communication.

The 2018 award recipients were:

Royal Society of Chemistry Certificate of Excellence: Elise Waldron-Young

Dean Joseph P. Buckley Pharmacy Leadership Award: Rodrigo de la Torre, Rebecca Kessinger and Thao Tran

The Mylan Pharmaceutical Excellence in Pharmacy Award: Rodrigo de la Torre

Lilly Achievement Award: Julie Ference

Award of Excellence in Clinical Communication Sponsored by Facts & Comparisons® and Lexicomp® brands of Wolters Kluwer Health: Devon El-Dana

The ASHP Health System Pharmacy Award: Manal El-Khalil

APhA-ASP Service Recognition Award: Katrina Watson

Phi Lambda Sigma Student Leadership Award: Gifty Gyebi

Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Clinical Skills: Austin Hinkel and Grace Hwang

RX Cougar Leadership Award: Noel Galang, Gifty Gyebi and Amy Kiley

Legislative and Policy Award: Shawn Ahmad

Most Spirited Volunteer and Leadership Award: Richard Ajumobi, Dozie Dike and Bajes Zayed

Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research Excellence Award: Grace Hwang, Salima Nathoo and Stephanie Pham

Communication and Counseling Award: Dylan Huff and Lauren Puckett

Award of Excellence in Non-Prescription Medications and Self Care: Luna Truong

James McCarty Community Pharmacy Internship Award: Asha Bhatt, Coby Finger and Leila Petok

Ambulatory Care Award: Rebecca Kessinger

Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy Graduate Student Excellence Award–Doctoral Program: Nandita Kachru and Navneet Upadhyay

In addition to the student awards, the UHCOP Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Lambda Sigma also recognizes a faculty member for his or her leadership in pharmacy and mentorship to students. The PLS Faculty Leadership Award honoree for 2017-18 is Divya A. Varkey, Pharm.D., M.S., clinical associate professor.
