The Cougar Card system now pulls your name from the preferred name section in the myUH System. As long as you have your preferred name entered into your myUH account, it will appear on your Cougar Card ID. See below for instructions.

The preferred name is now the default name on the class roster, grade roster, student milestones, transcript notes, grade change request and any printer friendly documents (self-service only). If there is not a preferred name listed  then the primary name is displayed.

Here is how students can enter a preferred name

  1. Log in to myUH
  2. Click "Main Menu" dropdown list
  3. Select "Campus Personal Information"
  4. Select "Names"
  5. Click on edit button next to "Preferred"
  6. Change and click save button

At this time, the students “legal” gender is still what is listed on their school record, but under most circumstances, gender is not indicated on the screen of UH employees.

NOTE ABOUT GET INVOLVED: On the Get Involved pages, you will be able to still see your legal name, However, no one else can. Your preferred name will be the only name appearing to other Get Involved users.

The Gender Diversity Living Learning Community (LLC) welcomes students of all gender identities and expressions who are seeking a safe, inclusive, comfortable, and supportive living environment. This may include students who identify as male, female, trans, gender non-conforming, or non-binary. Members will be able to explore expanded definitions and roles of gender in society, and engage community members in critical dialogues. Opportunities for community building, educational programming, and social events will be available throughout the year. This community will also have direct connections to campus support services and academic departments on-campus. This community will be housed in Cougar Place and Cougar Village.

In an effort to make the New Student Orientation inclusive and welcoming for our newest transgender and gender diverse Cougars, the Orientation Team provides an overnight exemption.

The exemption states that if a student's gender identity does not align with the sex indicated on their UH application then the student can request to be housed according to their gender identity. All students interested in requesting an exemption must email with a subject line containing their government name (for matching purposes), ID number, and OVERNIGHT EXEMPTION.

Voice Evaluation and Intervention Programs are available for transgender individuals who are interested in working on voice feminization or masculinization.

University of Houston students, faculty, and staff shall be permitted to participate in Departmental programs, activities, and services in accordance with the person's gender self-identification or expression. Click here for more information.

The UH Department of Athletics has stated that they will defer to the NCAA for all matters of inclusion. The NCAA Inclusion of Transgender Student-Athletes document states…"The Office of Inclusion will provide or enable programming and education, which sustains foundations of a diverse and inclusive culture across dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to age, race, sex, national origin, class, creed, educational background, disability, gender expression, geographical location, income, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation and work experiences."

Because UH's nondiscrimination statement includes gender identity and expression, students, staff and faculty are free to use the restroom of their choice. For those preferring more privacy, we are providing the following information.

The UH Endorsed Student Health Insurance (Academic Blue – BCBSTX) plan covers Transgender Services as follows.


Benefits are payable for Eligible Expenses incurred by a Covered Person for the treatment of transsexualism/gender identity disorder on the same basis as any other Sickness according to the limits and maximums shown in the Schedule of Benefits. The Eligible Expenses must be incurred while the Covered Person is insured for these benefits.

Eligible Expenses include:

  1. mental health counseling (subject to the limitations applicable to inpatient and outpatient treatment of Mental and Nervous Disorders);
  2. hormone replacement therapy;
  3. sexual reassignment surgery:
    1. for female to male: mastectomy, hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, vaginectomy, metoidioplasty, scrotoplasty, urethroplasty, placement of testicular prosthesis, phalloplasty; or
    2. for male to female: orchiectomy, penectomy, vaginoplasty, clitoroplasty, labiaplasty.

The Company will pay the Covered Percentage of the Eligible Expenses incurred in excess of the Deductible Amount.

No benefits will be paid for the Eligible Expense above under any other similar benefit provision contained in this Policy.

This site contains a list of local and national trans-competent providers in many disciplines, such as Primary Care, Behavioral Health, and Surgeons.

Quest Diagnostics provides clinical laboratory services to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Through their Patient Financial Assistance Program, they may adjust some or all laboratory charges for patients who cannot afford to pay for their clinical laboratory testing.

Primary Care Protocol provides comprehensive information for health professionals regarding the treatment of transgender patients.
