UH LGBTQ Resource Center Consolidated Scholarship Information and Application

For the 2022-2023 academic year, the LGBTQ Resource Center will manage seven (7) scholarships and award 11 individuals. All are paid out over two semesters and the minimum GPA must be met in the fall to remain eligible to receive funds in the spring semester. The information for each scholarship is listed below. Students can apply for 1 – 7 scholarships with this one application.

Judging

  1. Applications are evaluated in a fair and unbiased judging process by a committee of at least 3 UH staff or faculty.
  2. To ensure the anonymity of our participants, applications are judged without the names of participants attached.
  3. Decisions of the judges are final.

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO June 16th at 11:59 p.m.

Entry Deadline: Monday, June 13, 2022, at 5 pm

Scholarship winners will be announced by July 15, 2022.

*Due to application deadline extension, our scholarship winner announcement will be extended and announced by July 22nd, 2022.*

If minimum standards for a particular scholarship are not met by any applicant, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Alyssa R. Parks, LGBTQ+ Leadership Scholarship, $1500

Eligibility

  • Current UH undergraduate or graduate
  • Enrolled full-time Spr 22 & Fall 22
  • Cumulative UH GPA 2.5

Criteria

  • Leadership skills, experience and/or training in the last 3 years.

Alyssa R. Parks, LGBTQ+ Academic Excellence Scholarship, $1500

Eligibility

  • Current UH undergraduate or graduate
  • Enrolled full-time Spr 22 & Fall 22
  • Cumulative UH GPA 3.0

Alyssa R. Parks, LGBTQ+ (need-based), $1500

Eligibility

  • Current UH undergraduate or graduate
  • Enrolled full-time Spr 22 & Fall 22
  • Cumulative UH GPA 2.25

Enbridge, LGBTQ+ Fueling Futures Scholarship, $1,000

This scholarship was provided by Enbridge, as part of their Fueling Futures initiative.

Eligibility

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Enrolled in 6+ credits spring 2022 and fall 2022
  • May not be a family member/dependent of a current Enbridge Inc.
  • Previous recipient(s) of the scholarship are not eligible to receive the award in subsequent years.

Criteria

  • The successful candidate should have involvement with the LGBTQ Community or Organizations (e.g. UH LGBTQ Resource Center, student orgs, political orgs, etc.)

Jesse Clayton Jacobs Memorial Scholarship, LGBTQ Community Involvement, $2000

This scholarship honors the memory of Jesse Clayton Jacobs ('12), an alumnus of the University of Houston. The successful candidate of this $2000 scholarship will have been involved in the LGBTQ community in one or more ways in the last two years.

Eligibility

  • Current UH undergraduate
  • Enrolled in 9+ credits Spr 22 & Fall 22
  • Cumulative UH GPA 2.0
  • No winners from the past 2 years

Criteria

  • Involvement with the LGBTQ Community or Organizations (i.e. UH LGBTQ Resource Center, student orgs, political orgs, etc.)
  • Financial need (secondary)

LyondellBasell, LGBTQ+ Advancing Tomorrow's Workforce Scholarship

The funds will be used to support five scholarships at $1,000 per student for students at the University of Houston.

Eligibility: Student(s) must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a minimum 12 credit hours Spring 2022 and Fall 2022
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Previous recipient(s) of the scholarship are not eligible to this award in subsequent years

Criteria

  • The successful candidate should have involvement and engagement with the LGBTQ Resource Center and LGBTQ organizations
  • Encouraged to apply are students majoring in: Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, IT, or MIS.
  • Submit the following essay (#6): Please tell us something unique about yourself and why you feel you should be a recipient of a scholarship. This can include your motivations for seeking higher education, your identity, how you interact with your family, your proudest accomplishments, the impact you have in your community or at school, your personal or professional goals. What distinguishes you from other applicants? Is there anything vital you want to share?
  • The recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the University of Houston Scholarship Selection Committee.

UH LGBTQ Resource Center, Pride Scholarship, $600

This scholarship is an essay contest for current UH students. The essay topic is "The benefits of being LGBTQ". Many times, the LGBTQ community focuses on negative issues and problems that arise, so in this essay students will explore the joys, advantages, wonders, and benefits of being a member of this fabulous community.

Eligibility

  • Current UH undergraduate or graduate
  • Enrolled in 6+ credits Spr 22 & Fall 22
  • Cumulative UH GPA 2.0

Criteria

  • Essays will be judged on relevance to the topic, style, content, and quality of writing.

LGBTQ Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship will be for $500 minimum and is for incoming freshmen, current undergraduate students, or current graduate students at the University of Houston.

Houston

National

  • NLGJA Kay Longcope Scholarship Award - Funds scholarship for an LGBTQ person of color planning to pursue a career in journalism. Applicants must attend or plan on attending a U.S. community college or four-year university.
  • NLGJA Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award Funds $5000 scholarship for an LGBTQ student planning to pursue a career in journalism. The applicant must attend or plan to attend a U.S. community college or four-year university.
  • The Point Foundation Funds scholarships for undergrad, grad and post-grad students who are marginalized because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
  • American Atheists Gay/Lesbian College Scholarship Funds scholarships for students who are atheists, awarded primarily based on activism.
  • Colin Higgins Youth Courage Awards Colin Higgins Foundation awards grant youth activists ages 13 to 21 that have shown courage in fighting for LGBTQ human rights in their communities. To be considered for a grant, one must be nominated.
  • Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund Funds needs-based scholarships for students actively working toward peace and justice at an accredited institution.
  • HRC Foundation Scholarships Funds three non-renewable $2,000 scholarships for LGBTQ and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the fight for queer equality.
  • Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize Competition Funds scholarships for undergrad or grad student who writes a scholarly anthropological paper/study on an LGBTQ topic.
  • LEAGUE Foundation Matthew Shepard Scholarship Funds scholarship for a student who demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity and understanding in the community.
  • Stonewall Community Foundation Scholarships & Grants are sponsored by the Stonewall Community Foundation and awards three $3000 scholarships to lesbian-identified students who are motivated to make a difference and have a history of academic excellence and community service.
  • NOGLSTP National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals offers two $5000 scholarships to one undergraduate student and one graduate student in a science, technical, engineering, or mathematical (STEM) program.
  • College Resource Network A free scholarship search engine and college planning website specializing in Minority Scholarships with a focus on LGBTQ Scholarships.
  • Joshua Gomes Memorial Scholarship Fund - Funds aims to lay a path for hope for young adults with HIV/AIDS by providing academic scholarships to universities of their choice. Each $1,000 scholarship we award will give the recipient a strong message: You are worth investing in! Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of merit and need.
  • Gamma Mu Foundation- Scholarships are awarded to LGBTQ+ students based upon financial need.
  • The #TransgenderFirst Scholarship - The first national scholarship ($2500) is dedicated to helping underserved Transgender students get affordable access to a college education. Deadline 12/31
