BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN STAGE MANAGEMENT

Students learn the art of stage management in intimate, collaborative and ensemble-based classes while being consistently exposed to industry artists and best practices. Stage Management students gain vast experience with a range of projects from new play development to opera to classical works. Stage Management graduates are successfully working with companies locally, regionally, and nationally. The Stage Management Program at UH has 100% placement post-graduation.

Students spend their first two years learning and honing foundational skills in technical production, stage management, design, graphic communication, play reading and analysis, and architectural and costume history. Their training includes both classroom work and hands-on experience on at least one show per semester. In their upperclassman years, students continue to develop skills in leadership, communication and problem solving. The coursework also introduces students to production management and other associated entertainment fields, such as opera, ballet, film and events management. Students act as a stage manager or assistant stage manager on one show per semester throughout their residency, and their training culminates in a professional internship with a local theatre.

We train for the profession with the profession, in the 4th largest city in the country. Professional artists and guest lecturers work with our students, allowing them to network and gain practical experience. Our faculty and professional artists can give one-on-one mentoring and career consultation. Houston has a large arts community that gives our students access to internships, observer-ships, and over hire possibilities with organizations such as: Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Alley Theatre, Stages Repertory Company, and Local 51. In addition, the School of Theatre & Dance produces the Houston Shakespeare Festival, a summer festival, which performs to approximately 30,000 patrons, each season.
