Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration

The 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration is an opportunity for the University of Houston community to celebrate and reflect on the legacy and life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We gather during this time to honor the work and accomplishments of one of the most prolific leaders in modern history.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s final book is titled Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? The events of 2020 have caused many to ask this very question. From navigating a global pandemic that has effectively changed the way we live in every aspect to the ongoing uprisings in the wake of the murder of Ahmad Aubrey, Breona Taylor, George Floyd, and the like.

Both pandemics, COVID-19 and the pandemic of racial inequality have renewed and reinvigorated the conversation of racial equity and social justice.

As we embark on the 35th national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we do so with a country just as divided, if not more so than one Dr. King left in 1968. As we commemorate the legacy of MLK let’s reflect on the lessons and examples he left for creating a more just world.
