Eve Esch, Director of the Student Centers, Elected to ACUI’s Board of Trustees

On November 27, 2018, the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) announced the results for this year’s Board of Trustees election. Hundreds of members from across the association, representing eight regions, cast their ballots and three new board members were named. One of these was Eve Esch, Director of the Student Centers, who will take office for her two-year term at the 2019 Annual Conference held March 24-28 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ms. Esch is looking forward to engaging with the Association's strategies, finances, and governance to further enhance the community and lead the future of ACUI and the college union field.

“I’m excited and honored to give back to an association who has given me so much,” said Esch.

Limited Operations In Observance of Official Day of Mourning

In observance of the Governor’s recent Executive Order regarding the Day of Mourning for our 41st President, George H.W. Bush, the Student Centers will have limited operations with a 10:00 p.m closure on Wednesday, December 5th. All Student Centers South Dining options will be open their regular hours and the Games Room will be open from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. The Student Centers Satellite will not be opening tomorrow. Please refer to our Hours of Operation page for regular hours.

CreationStation and Student Centers Win Graphics Awards

The University of Houston’s Student Centers and Creation Station took home multiple awards in the 2018 ACUI Region II Graphics Competition. A brochure designed by Marketing manager Lauren Ellzey and web developer Kyle Stehling took first place in the Multi-Page Publication Category. In addition, CreationStation took third place in the Miscellaneous category for the Friends of Women’s Studies graduation invitations, created by graphic designer Julia Org. CreationStation also took third place in the Poster category out of over 70 entries for Student Program Board’s Infinity War poster, made by student designer Nick Peterson.

CreationStation brought home second place in the Multi-Page Publication category for the 2018 Panhellenic Recruitment Guide created by student designer Kevin Marroquin. DSAES would like to congratulate all of the designers on their hard work and their excellent performance at the 2018 ACUI Region II Graphics Competition.

Student Centers Satellite Now Partially Open

The Student Centers Satellite partial reopening includes Starbucks, Smoothie King, Market, TV Lounge, and Games Room. The grand reopening is scheduled for the start of next semester.

Student Centers Fall Fun

Student Centers hosted its Fall Fun event Thursday, October 18 from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the Student Center Plaza.

The event included activities such as pumpkin decorating, face painting and a photo booth. The Student Centers partnered with other campus departments including, Center for Student Media, UH Wellness, Student Government Association, Council for Cultural Activities, Shasta’s Cones & More, CreationStation and UH Homecoming. Over 400 students attended the event.

Student Centers Kicks Off Film Series

Student Centers kicked off its film series in partnership with the Office of Sustainability Wednesday, October 17th from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. in the Student Centers Theater with the film Fed Up. The Student Centers Film Series is designed to show films that have important social or educational messages.

Student Centers offered a free screening of the film, followed by a conversation about sustainable eating lead by Gabriel Durham a Program Coordinator with the Office of Sustainability. The first 50 attendees also received a free, limited-edition Student Centers tumbler. The film series will continue November 13th with a screening of Free Cece! from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., in partnership with the LGBTQ Resource Center.

Student Center Satellite Temporarily Closed

Due to ongoing maintenance related to damages from Hurricane Harvey, the Student Center Satellite will be temporarily closed until further notice.

The Satellite, including the Games Room and the dining locations, will remain closed until repairs are complete. It is anticipated to reopen in January.

University of Houston’s Student Government Association and Student Centers hosts the Inside Out Project

On Monday, September 17, the University of Houston’s Student Government Association (SGA) and Student Centers hosted the Inside Out Project, a global art project which allows individuals to get their portraits taken and make a statement of what they stand for in the world. The portraits are documented, archived, and exhibited online at www.insideoutproject.net. Over 100,000 posters have been seen in more than 108 countries since March 2011.

The Inside Out Project currently focuses on the topic of voter registration, a topic that SGA has been actively working on as well. The installation features those who are registered to do their civic duty and those who support the democratic process. Hundreds of students had their portrait taken and dozens filled out the paperwork to be registered to vote.

Portraits will be displayed on the plaza between the Student Center North & Student Center South buildings until Friday, September 28.

DSAES To Host Debate Watch Party for Students

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services is proud to host a student watch party for the debate between U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke on Sunday, September 30. UH students are invited to come to the Student Center Houston Room to watch a broadcast of the debate between incumbent Republican Senator Cruz and his Democratic challenger, O’Rourke. The Senator and the Senate hopeful will discuss a number of topics in a town hall-style meeting at the University of Houston.

This debate is the second of three held throughout Texas between Cruz and O’Rourke. Dallas will host the first debate September 21 and San Antonio will host the third one October 16. Cruz and O’Rourke will be discussing many topics over the course of the three debate events. Early voting begins October 22, six days after the third and final debate in San Antonio.

Doors open in the Student Center Houston Room for the student watch party at 5:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and the debate is scheduled to air from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Voter registration will also be available.

Eve Esch, Director of the Student Centers, wins Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Ambassador Award

On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Eve Esch, Director of the Student Centers, was awarded with The Ambassador Award at the Annual DSAES Awards Luncheon for her volunteer work and professional involvement with organizations such as the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). Esch recently served as a member of ACUI’s Annual Conference Planning Team and has co-taught online courses about student employee supervision.

The Ambassador Award honors a staff member or group of staff who has brought significant recognition to the University of Houston and the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services. He, she, they or the group is known and has been recognized as a leader in their professional field, or has received recognition for their contribution to the discipline in some substantial and significant way, thus serving as a model for Student Affairs staff/office/departments everywhere.

Esch also serves on Staff Council and several other university committees.

Offices Temporarily Relocated

The Student Centers Administrative Suite (271), which houses Business Services, Office of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services IT and Student Centers, will be temporarily relocated to the Midtown Room (262) due to renovations. Renovations will run from May 15, 2018 until July 18, 2018 tentatively.

Student Centers Graduate Assistant wins ACUI Scholarship

Melissa Iracheta, first year graduate student in the Masters of Education, Higher Education program in the College of Education at the University of Houston was awarded the C. Richard Scott Memorial Scholarship from the Association of College Unions International. Iracheta is currently the Marketing Graduate Student in the Student Centers.

The winner was announced at the 2018 Annual Conference on March 23 rd, 2018 in Anaheim, California.

The C. Richard Scott Memorial Scholarship will enable Iracheta to participate in an ACUI – sponsored education activity to learn more about the profession, take part in leadership and community development activities. “I am very excited to have been awarded this scholarship. I plan on using the scholarship funds to participate in the ACUI’s Collegiate Marketing Institute in November, 2018. I hope to enhance my marketing skills and excel as a marketing Graduate Assistant at the Student Centers.” says Iracheta.

This is one of four awards that the University of Houston received at this year’s annual ACUI conference. Iracheta looks forward to engaging more with ACUI and the opportunities it provides.

Lauren Sposato wins ACUI's Excellence in Volunteer Service Award

Lauren Sposato, Assistant Director of Events and Special Programs for the Student Center, has received the Excellence in Volunteer Service Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). This award, amongst others received by the institution, was announced at the 2018 Annual Conference in Anaheim during the Honors Awards Ceremony on March 22nd, 2018. The award honors professionals for their commitment to the college union and their volunteer service to the Association.

Sposato says, “I am honored to have been nominated by my colleagues for this award. The University of Houston is a place that truly values professional development, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have the support from my supervisor and the Division to volunteer for an Association that provides me with great opportunities”. The University is proud to acknowledge Sposato for her achievement, and we hope to advance further in future ACUI endeavors.

Student Centers Welcomes New Marketing Manager

The Student Centers at the University of Houston announced Lauren Ellzey as its new Marketing Manager on May 1, 2018.

Lauren is responsible for providing marketing direction, support and guidance for the areas within the Student Centers (Conference and Reservation Services – CARS; Student Centers Games Rooms; Shasta’s Cones & More; Student Center Policy Board; Student Centers Sustainability Committee; Student Centers Art Board, and Creation Station) as well as implementing Student Centers programs and events. Additionally, Lauren will further enhance the brand of the Student Centers to help tell its story.

Lauren has a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art and Education from Houston Baptist University and received a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston. In her previous role, Lauren was the Manager of Information and Operations of the Student Centers at the University of Houston.

Student Centers Welcomes New Sales and Events Manager

Caitlin Goodwill has joined the Student Centers team as the Events and Sales Manager.

Caitlin is responsible for helping customers with event space reservations and providing leadership to Conference and Reservations Services (CARS) within the Student Centers. She will work with Registered Student Organizations and student groups, campus departments, and off-campus clients to understand and navigate building and space use policies and procedures when going through the reservations process. Additionally, Caitlin will work to understand each group’s needs and help connect them with necessary campus resources to ensure successful events.

Caitlin has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Washington State University and a Master of Education in Higher Education from Texas Tech University. In her previous role, Caitlin was the Coordinator of Student Life at Yakima Valley College in Washington.

Cougar Casino at Frontier Fiesta

The Student Centers and Student Housing and Residential Life invites you to try your luck at our annual Cougar Casino event at Frontier Fiesta. Come and enjoy the western-themed traditions of Frontier Fiesta as we create a casino for all students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to enjoy.

Cougar Casino offers a variety of casino games, which include Blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em, and Roulette. As part of all the excitement, all players will be able to exchange their winnings for tickets that will enter them into grand prize drawings, which occur at the end of each night. The casino will also have door prize drawings each hour throughout the event.

The Cougar Casino doors swing open at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 22 & 23 and close both evenings at 10:00 p.m. All the excitement continues the next day, March 24 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The University of Houston’s Frontier Fiesta is one of the most recognized events on campus.
