Student Centers Welcomes New Director

November 30, 2015 - Eve Esch will join the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services as the Director of the Student Centers effective January 11, 2016. The Student Centers facilities include Student Center North, Student Center South and the Student Center Satellite. Departmentally, the Student Centers serves to ensure strategic initiatives are achieved and programs and services are maintained at a high quality to provide an environment that contributes to increased student engagement, student learning, and student success.

As the new Director of the Student Centers (SC), Esch will provide leadership, supervision, and management of programs, services, facilities and personnel for Student Centers’ departmental units: SC Event Services including: SC Conference & Reservation Services Office, Audio-Visual Services, and SC Setup Services; SC Facilities and Operations including: Facilities and Operations Services Coordination, SC Information Center and SC Customer Relations Managers; SC Administrative Services and Operations Office; SC Leisure Services including: SC & SCS Games Room Programs and Operations, Shasta’s Cones & More, and Little Shasta’s Retail Operations.

Esch brings approximately 14 years of valuable experience in the field of Student Affairs, specifically in the realm of Student Unions and related facilities with her to the University of Houston. Previously, she served as an Event Production Coordinator, Assistant Director, Senior Assistant Director, and for the last four years as Director of Ohio Union Events at The Ohio State University. In the aforementioned position she led the new construction and opening of a student union that served 63,000 students.

Esch earned her Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the Ohio State University and a Bachelors of Arts in Public Relations and Fitness Exercise from Purdue University. She is an active member of Golden Key and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.  Esch is also an active member with the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), and has held various leadership positions such as Education Co-Chair for Facilities & Operations from 2004-2007, Regional Conference Planning Teams in 2007, 2011 & 2013, and currently as a member of the Education & Research Fund Program Team.

“Eve Esch brings her proven track record from The Ohio State University where she led the process of creating a Tier One service culture for the staff and students of the Ohio Union community (during and post the construction of a new 318,000 sq. ft. and $118M facility in 2010).  Eve has tremendous experience in event and program management, which is critical as the Student Centers is now the prime location at UH for conferences, large-scale and high-profile events.  Eve is a winner and we are delighted she will become a UH Cougar in January “ said Keith T. Kowalka, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, UH.

Keiry Lazo: Student Employee of the Month

Fall Fest

Have you been looking for some exciting things to do around campus? We have a week of celebrations just for you! Fall Fest will include a ‘Pumpkin Bash’ event at the Student Center, Victory Sundays, Snack and Paint, Pumpkin Bash, Book of Life, Survive UH, Nightmare on Wheeler Street, and a Día de los Muertos celebration. UH Remembers September 11

This year will mark the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy that forever changed the lives of many Americans. To pay tribute to those who lost their lives and their surviving loved ones, the University of Houston Student Centers along with UH Veteran Services will host several free public events throughout the day.

At 9:00am, a ceremony will kick off this day of remembrance. This ceremony will be held at the UH World Trade Center Memorial and Reflection Garden located just outside of Student Center South’s south entrance.

Later that morning, Ralph B. DeVaul Jr. will moderate a panel discussion featuring the brave first responders and Maj. Gen. Barrye Price who assisted following the attack. The discussion will begin at 11:00am

The Student Center Theater will host a screening of the film “United 93” at 7:00pm The film depicts the fate of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a field in Stonycreek, Pennsylvania.

In the hallway next to the theater, the campus community can view “Remembering 9/11,” a photo exhibition that will be on display from 8:00am – 10:00pm

Free “UH Remembering 9/11” ribbons will be available at the Student Center Information Center for students, faculty, staff and visitors to show their support throughout their day. Ribbons are available while supplies last.

Community members can also share thoughts on a “Remembering 9/11” wall located near the main entrance of the Student Center South. They can contribute to the remembrance wall using postcards that will be available or through an online submission form. For more information, please visit www.uh.edu/remembering911

Be a Part of Positive Change: The Student Center Policy Board Now Accepting Applications

Are you looking for another way to get involved with the Student Center? Now is your chance!

The Student Center Policy Board (SCPB) is searching for two students to serve as at-large members for a 1-year term (Fall 2015-2016) and a 2-year term (Fall 2015-2017). Any UH student is eligible to apply with the exception of current student employees of the Student Centers. The 19-member board includes students, faculty and staff.

The SCPB assists in policy development and long-range planning for the Student Center and the SC Satellite and advises the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs on programs and services. Recently the SCPB has been involved with the New UC Transformation Project, providing computers for the Student Organization carrel area, and securing additional bike racks for the Student Center.

The board meets monthly for approximately 2 hours. The two selected at-large members will attend their first meeting of the 2015-2016 SCPB at the start of the Fall 2015 semester.

Snack & Paint

“The only time I feel alive is when I’m Painting” – Vincent Van Gogh. Wind down the semester, relax, and paint on a canvas as the night turns into a fun night with friends. Join us in the Legacy Lounge for some fun DIY Snacks and relaxing music while you paint along with a talented instructor. The instructor will guide you step by step from blank canvas to finished masterpiece! Everything is provided: canvas, paints, brushes, easels and aprons. No previous art experience is necessary! Please arrive on time as the class will begin promptly at 7:30pm.

Stress Free Finals

Looking to relax just before finals? Do you often find yourself juggling many assignments at one time?  As the semester is quickly coming to a close, along with this comes added stress from exams, papers and projects.  Stress Free Finals Week provides you with an opportunity to relax and breakaway from your day-to-day worries.

Enjoy a week of activities brought to you by a variety of campus departments and student organizations. The excitement begins on Monday April 27th and lasts through Tuesday May 5th. The kickoff event will be on Tuesday April 28th from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the Student Center Front Circle.  There will be a chill out zone complete with hammocks, chairs, hoola hoops and board games. There will also be do it yourself stress balls, free fans, bubble wrap and flavor ice pops. This list of events will conclude with the much anticipated Finals Mania on May 4 from 8:30 – 11:00pm in the M.D. Anderson Library. Complete with your full service pancake breakfast along with massages and puppies.

Kowalka Receives the 2015 ACUI Values Award

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) awarded the “2015 ACUI Values Award” to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs; Keith T. Kowalka at its annual conference held in San Antonio, Texas. The ACUI Values Award recognizes an individual who actively and continuously demonstrates adherence to the core values of the Association (unconditional human worth, joy, caring community, learning, innovation, integrity and diversity) on their campus. Kowalka has successfully demonstrated these principles while at the University of Houston and his volunteer involvement with ACUI over his more than twenty years of service.

Kowalka’ s nomination was coordinated by Assistant Director for the Center for Student Involvement, Kristen Ernst with supporting letters of recommendation from Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Dr. Richard Walker, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Dan Maxwell, and Director of Assessment & Planning for the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Dr. Pam Shefman.

Kowalka has worked for the University of Houston since 1998. He continues to place students first in his everyday decisions and provides mentorship to those in the Student Affairs profession. He has been active in ACUI for over 20 years. His past international volunteer roles  within ACUI include serving as the 2011 ACUI Annual Conference Chair, the I-LEAD® Program Chair, the Educational and Research Fund Program Team; and serving as the Regional Director, Conference Chair, and Development Coordinator at the Regional level.

This award serves as Kowalka’ s fifth from ACUI. The Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Services is pleased that ACUI has recognized the work of one of its own at the University of Houston.

About ACUI: Founded in 1914, ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from hundreds of schools in seven countries. Its members work on urban and rural campuses, in two-year and four-year institutions, and at large and small schools. They are students and administrators whose mission is to build campus community. ACUI enriches them all through education, advocacy, and the delivery of services.

Student Centers and Student Housing & Residential Life Present Cougar Casino at Frontier Fiesta

The Student Centers invites you to try your luck at our annual Cougar Casino event at Frontier Fiesta. The Cougar Casino maintains the western-themed traditions of Frontier Fiesta by putting on a Wild West casino for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni to enjoy.

Brought to you in association with Student Housing & Residential Life, the Cougar Casino offers a variety of casino games, which include Blackjack, Texas Hold‘em, and Roulette. As part of all the excitement, all players will be able to exchange their winnings for tickets that will enter them into grand prize drawings, which occur at the end of each night. The casino will also have door prize drawings each hour throughout the event.

The University of Houston’s Frontier Fiesta is one of the most recognized events on campus. Come out, show your support, test your luck and most of all, celebrate and enjoy one of University of Houston’s valued and long-standing traditions.

"Play it Safe" Spring Break

Welcome to “Play it Safe” Spring Break, Vegas Style! It is always more fun to gamble with games than gamble with your safety! Come jump start your Spring Break at our Play it Safe Spring Break event. There will be fun activities and giveaways that will allow you to relax after all your mid-terms.

The Student Center wants to help YOU, not only enjoy your break, but to also return safe and sound. To promote a safe spring break, the Student Center will host its annual spring break event, themed this year in Vegas Style!

This event will be held on Wednesday, March 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center Front Circle.

Festivities will range from Card games with a chance to win a Prize, Sand adventures, obstacles courses and more. There will also be useful spring break giveaways including FREE Sun tan Lotion, Spring Break Wristbands, Electrolyte packages, Visors and more.  Come join us for exciting activities and other safe break tips & goodies! Exhibitors will give health and safety tips and giveaways for you to take with you, no matter your destination.

Additionally, there will be FREE mini cones provided by Shasta's Cones’ & More.
