Class Registration Changes
UH System Policy states that international students with "F" or "J" visa status are required to be covered under the UH System-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan or have equivalent health insurance coverage, regardless of the number of credit hours taken. At the time of registration, the student will automatically be charged for the mandatory UHS-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) coverage period on their student financial account.
Changes/corrections that may affect or reverse a student's waiver, enrollment in the mandatory SHIP, or being charged the health insurance fee must be posted to the student's university account no later than the posted deadline for the current term. (Including, but not limited to, a change in residency, citizenship or visa status, class enrollment, etc.)
The Official Reporting Day listed for the regular session for each term is used as the posted deadline.
- Fall 2024: September 4, 2024 @ 5:00 PM (CST)
- Spring 2025: January 29, 2025 @ 5:00 PM (CST)
- Summer 2025: June 5, 2025 @ 5:00 PM (CST)
Registering for Classes After the Posted Deadline
If you register for classes after the posted deadline for the current term and have not been charged the health insurance fee, it is your responsibility to enroll in the UH System-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan as a Qualifying Event prior to your first class day.
Deferred or Canceled Admissions
If you defer or cancel your admissions after you have registered for classes and been charged the health insurance fee, it is your responsibility to verify that your class schedule has been cleared before the term’s posted deadline and to follow the same instructions for dropping or withdrawing from all classes.
Dropping or Withdrawing from All Classes
If you drop or withdraw from all classes prior to the posted deadline for the current term, it is your responsibility to verify that your class schedule has been cleared prior to the posted deadline.
If the health insurance fee was reversed and you decide to register for classes during a later session of the same insurance coverage period, it is your responsibility to enroll in the UH System-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan as a Qualifying Event prior to the first class day of the new session.
The reversal of the health insurance fee due to dropped classes or withdrawal will be processed as follows:
- If all of your classes were dropped prior to the first class day of the regular session for the current term, the health insurance fee will automatically reverse within one business day after the posted deadline. It is your responsibility to verify that the health insurance fee has been removed from your university financial account within 10 days of the term's posted deadline.
- If all of your classes were dropped prior to the first class day due to non-payment (zapped by bursar), the health insurance fee will automatically reverse within one business day. It is your responsibility to verify that the health insurance fee has been removed from your university financial account prior to the term's posted deadline. If you register in classes again prior to the posted deadline, the health insurance fee will be automatically added to your university financial account again.
- If all of your classes were dropped after the first class day but prior to the posted deadline for the current term, the health insurance fee will automatically reverse one day after the posted deadline. It is your responsibility to verify that the health insurance fee has been removed from your university financial account within 10 days of the term's posted deadline.
- If you withdraw from all classes prior to the posted deadline for the current term, the health insurance fee will be manually reversed one day after the posted deadline if notification has been submitted. It is your responsibility to submit a notification of your withdrawal no later than the posted deadline and to verify that the health insurance fee has been removed from your university financial account within 10 days of the term's posted deadline.
- If you withdraw or are dropped from all classes after the term's posted deadline and receive a full refund of all tuition and university fees. It is your responsibility to submit a notification of the change of your class registration no later than 10 days of your refund so that your health insurance fee can be manually removed from your university financial account. Notifications will no longer be accepted after the term's last class day (per the Academic Calendar).
