The Radiation Safety Program provides adequate safeguards to the health and well-being of the University of Houston (UH) community and the community-at-large from the potentially harmful effects of radiation. This is accomplished through policies and procedures that promote good health physics work practices, in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and university policies. The program also assists all levels of management fulfill the University of Houston’s commitment to provide a place of employment, learning, and research that is reasonably free from recognized radiation hazards. 

The broad scope use of radioactive material, and consolidated x-ray and laser use play an important supporting role in UH’s teaching, research, clinical and operations towards educating future professionals, discovery and translation of advances in science, technology, engineering and clinical research and patient care.

Program implementation rests on the Radiation Safety Officer and staff within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department. The Radiation Safety Committee, under the functional authority of the Vice President of Research & Technology Transfer maintains program compliance oversight.
