Undergraduate Student Success Accelerated Readmission Program

"You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." -- C. S. Lewis.

You didn’t start at the University of Houston with the intention of being placed on Academic Suspension, and I’m sure you are as concerned about your situation as I am. Let’s make a plan for your return.

Fewer than 5% of students who are suspended return to UH and graduate. We believe that getting you on a path to success right now will improve your chances of successfully completing your degree.

Undergraduate Student Success invites you to consider applying to the Accelerated Readmission program that would allow you to return from suspension IMMEDIATELY and remain enrolled for the Fall 2024 semester, as opposed to the traditional Suspension policy that requires a one-semester period of suspension. Remaining enrolled means that you would have no interruption to your degree pursuit.

The Undergraduate Student Success Accelerated Readmission program may be a good option for you if:

  • You understand your course-related challenges, and you are ready NOW to address them.
  • You have recently decided that pursuing a different major will allow you to perform better academically, and you are ready NOW to pursue a new major.
  • You have had outside life obligations, situations, or habits that have prevented you from being a strong student, and you are ready NOW to make changes in your personal obligations, situations, or habits.
  • The announcement that you were placed on Academic Suspension has sufficiently grabbed your attention, and you are ready NOW to take action to get back on track.
  • You are ready NOW to do everything possible to graduate as a UH Cougar!

Program Features:

  • Upon acceptance, the Accelerated Readmission program will:

    • Waive the one-semester suspension period, reinstate you to active status, and remove your enrollment hold to allow you to re-enroll in a reduced course load.
    • Develop your personal Academic Success Plan designed to allow you to again gain good academic standing and transition to your final academic major.
    • Provide support, accountability, and close supervision to encourage the academic performance necessary to get back on track.
  • As a participant, you will:

    • Attend a required intake advising appointment to devise a personal Academic Success Plan, to include GPA projections and any referrals necessary.
    • Enroll in a special section of USS 1101 in Fall 2025, to provide regular support, the development of successful habits, and accountability for your academic return. (Note: if you already took CORE 1101 during your first semester, you will retake it.)
    • Re-enroll in a reduced courseload your first semester back, intended to allow you to increase your GPA in pursuit of good academic standing and your major-change plans.
    • Be matched to a Peer Mentor who will be your main contact and support source throughout the fall semester.
    • Meet with a LAUNCH academic coach for an initial assessment, and then complete all other prescribed success recommendations, e.g., tutoring, workshops, and other non-LAUNCH referrals.
    • Participate ACTIVELY in accountability and support activities, including such things as attending program appointments (which may be in person or virtual), responding to weekly check-in communication from the Peer Mentor, completing regular time-management, assignment planning, and completion activities, and other activities.
    • Limit outside work hours to not more than 20 hrs/wk.
    • Satisfy any outstanding financial balances prior to enrollment.
    • Complete an individual review with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, if necessary, so that you understand how your academic status impacts your ability to receive financial aid.
    • Identify and follow a disciplined pursuit of change-of-major requirements. Your options to change majors will be limited based on the number of hours you have completed and your UH cumulative GPA. It may not be possible to change to certain majors, so you must be open to new directions.
    • Understand that your cumulative GPA may not be raised enough in one semester to regain good academic standing, and that you may remain in the program until your GPA is above 2.0.
    • Understand that if your semester GPA falls below 2.0 during the first semester back, or during any semester while you are on Probation following Suspension, your academic status will change to Second Academic Suspension, which will require you to remain away from UH for a period of 12 months.

OK, I think the Accelerated Readmission program may be a good option for me. What do I do next?

  • Just to be clear...the Accelerated Readmission program is designed to be rigorous, building in all of the elements that are required to encourage your successful return to good academic standing. It is not designed to be an easy route back to UH, but rather the successful route back to academic success. Please think carefully about this opportunity and the work it will require, and discuss your options with your family, if you wish. Be true to yourself – if it would be better for you to take the traditional semester away from UH to plan your return, then this accelerated plan may not be your best option. Submitting this application indicates to us that you are ready to make completing your degree your top priority.
