Fall 2022 Academic Associates Program
Applications due Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 5 pm
Introductory Course
Students take didactic seminars (virtually) on research methods, data collection & processing, and ethical issues related to research while participating in clinical research and observation of clinical practice in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Texas Children's Hospital. Clinical and observational participation will depend on safety and social-distancing guidelines during the semester.
Advanced Course
Students will focus on 1–2 research projects, learn how to write a research project in a scientific paper format and develop their career goals with the virtual assistance of a faculty member.
Eligibility
Sophomore and Junior Students as of Fall 2022
Undergraduate students who are not in a joint undergraduate/medical school program, such as HBS or HPA. The application requires a one-page essay on the following: My understanding of clinical research and how it can advance my career.
Time Commitment
- 6 hours for orientation
- 6 hours every 2 weeks of clinical duties
- Available on 6 select Fridays for one-hour virtual lectures and exams
Benefits of Participation
- 3 course credit hours
- Exposure to both clinical medicine and clinical research that may assist with career decision making. (Alternative projects may replace direct clinical observation in accordance with evolving safety guidelines for both the introductory and advanced courses.)
- Access to clinicians and researchers that may lead to mentor/mentee relationships that could help in their professions
