Maggie serves as the Director for Global Engagement with the Institute for Global Engagement. She is currently supporting the Learning Abroad Assistant Director position until the role is filled.
The Assistant Director provides leadership, direction, and supervision for the Learning Abroad office and Passport for Coogs functional area. They develop and lead the office's strategic goals and planning, and they oversee faculty-led program development and support, university and provider partnerships, risk and emergency management, assessment, reporting, and budgeting.
Learning Abroad Advisor
Jade advises for students in the colleges of Business, Natural Science and Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Nursing, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Graduate College of Social Work, the Hobby School, Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy, and student service learning groups.
Jade joined the team in July 2021. Prior to this role, Jade served as a Study Abroad Advisor at Georgia State University. Jade has earned her Master of Science Education in College Student Personnel Administration and her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). Jade has always had dreams to travel the world and understood that you can learn so much by viewing different cultures. While earning her Bachelor degree, Jade participated in a summer program in San José, Costa Rica with an affiliated partner. In addition to this trip, Jade has traveled to Canada and the Dominican Republic. Jade has a strong passion for helping students travel and learn abroad to develop their own personal identity, influence their cultural perspectives, and advance in their academics. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching her favorite streaming networks, Netflix and Disney+, playing softball, trying new foods, and of course, traveling!
Learning Abroad Advisor
Allison advises for students in the colleges of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Arts, Education, Honors, Exploratory Studies students, Reciprocal Exchange students, and fellowship students.
Allison Carruthers joined the Learning Abroad team in July 2021. Allison has a Master of Science in Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with minors in Spanish and Business Administration from Baylor University. As an undergraduate student she spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain at Universidad Pablo de Olavide. She is fluent in Spanish and prior to joining Learning Abroad she spent two years living and working in international education in Puerto Rico. In addition, she has also travelled in Western Europe, the Caribbean, Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada, and Morocco. In her free time, Allison enjoys baking, reading, and planning her next local or global adventure.
Tiffany joined the Learning Abroad team in April 2022. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and minoring in Medicine & Society as part of the Honors College. During her junior year, she spent a semester abroad in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Her experience abroad inspired her to become more involved in the learning abroad process for others, and continues to influence her academic, professional, and personal choices today. After graduation, she intends to pursue her Master’s in Social Work and become a licensed clinical social worker, providing therapy for underserved, marginalized populations in the Houston area. In her free time, Tiffany enjoys reading, cooking, practicing archery, and eating hot pot with friends and family.
Sydney joined the Learning Abroad team in May 2022. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and minoring in History. Sydney plans to study abroad during the coming fall 2022 semester in Rome, Italy. She hopes to help others with their learning abroad journey along the way while preparing for her own. Sydney has previously worked on campus as the Managing Editor at The Cougar, UH's student newspaper. After graduation, she hopes to travel the world as much as she can and pursue journalism in as many different countries, cultures and forms as possible. In her free time, she enjoys writing, reading and trying many of the different food places Houston has to offer.
