Eligibility

To be eligible to graduate, students must:

  • Apply for graduation by the appropriate deadline. This means that students who have been disapproved for graduation in a previous semester must reapply.
  • Complete all degree requirements in the semester they intend to graduate.
  • Clear all financial stops and meet any exit interview obligations.

To be eligible to participate in University commencement exercises, students must:

  • Apply for graduation by the appropriate deadline. This means that students who have been disapproved for graduation in a previous semester must reapply.
  • Be conditionally approved to graduate. This means that students must complete or be enrolled in all requirements for the degree during the semester they apply. If students have a course remaining to take in a future semester, they will be disapproved for participation in graduation.

You may apply for graduation by using an online application form by logging onto MyUH (PeopleSoft).

Unfortunately, applicants who submit applications late may not have their names listed in the program because of publication deadlines. If you plan to participate in the ceremony, please be aware of the deadlines.

Privacy

If you have previously requested that your record reflect a "DO NOT RELEASE PUBLIC INFORMATION" notice or if you do not want your name to appear on the program, please indicate this on the graduation application; otherwise, your name will be listed on the program as long as your application was submitted by the deadline.

Honors

Undergraduate students* who complete their degree requirements will graduate with the stated academic honors if they achieve the following grade point averages earned in the last 54 hours (all of which must be letter-grade courses: A, B, C, etc.) completed at the University of Houston. Grades of S, U, I and W are not assigned grade point values and are not used in the computation of the grade point average.

GPAs Required for Honors
3.90 to 4.0 Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors)
3.70 to 3.89 Magna Cum Laude (with high honors)
3.50 to 3.69 Cum Laude (with honors)

Further, the honors calculation will include all hours completed in the semester in which the first of those final 54 hours was completed.

*Please note: Graduate students must have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher as a requirement for their respective programs; therefore, there is no recognition of the honor status.

Diplomas

It takes approximately six to eight weeks from the close of the term for colleges to review graduation applications and submit decisions to the UH Registrar’s Office for processing. Diplomas are ordered once a student has been approved and a degree officially conferred and posted.

Diplomas are mailed directly to students at the most current address provided through their myUH student account. The diploma printing company will also send email notifications to diploma recipients indicating when diplomas have been mailed. It’s important to keep contact information updated in MyUH to avoid shipment delays.

More information about diplomas is available on the UH Academic Forms webpage.
