UH College of Education Experts to Present at National Educational Leadership Conference

New OrleansPosted Nov. 18, 2019 — School leadership experts from the University of Houston College of Education will share their research on pressing K-12 and higher education issues at the 2019 University Council for Educational Administration conference in New Orleans.

College faculty, students and alumni will present on an array of topics, including principal preparation in diverse communities, the school-to-prison-pipeline, mentoring and culturally responsive practices. The conference, which takes place Nov. 20-23, brings together university and K-12 educational leaders, researchers and student scholars for professional development and networking.

The theme this year is “Where y’at: Validating subaltern forms of leadership and learning with/in and outside of schools.”

“UCEA is the discipline’s premier conference," said Professor Cathy Horn, who chairs the College’s Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies. "It provides a critical opportunity for scholars and scholar practitioners to engage together in empirically driven discussions about key leadership issues. It is a privilege to have the research of our faculty and students at the center of such essential work.”

April Peters-Hawkins, associate chair of the ELPS department and the 2016-17 past president of UCEA, said she appreciates the opportunity to share research, interact with colleagues and informally mentor junior faculty and students at the annual UCEA convention. "I am very much looking forward to engaging with scholars from across the country and sharing my latest research projects," she said.

Paula Myrick Shortsenior vice chancellor for academic affairs for the UH System and senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at UH, is scheduled to participate in several sessions. Short, a distinguished professor in the College of Education, is a past UCEA president and recipient of the association's Jack Culbertson Award and the Master Professor Award.
