CLASS Scholars

Description

The CLASS Scholars’ program will nurture high achieving students by providing them with the academic experience, financial resources, and mentorship support necessary to mature into the proficient graduates and global leaders empowered to affect positive change in the world. Successful CLASS Scholars will be equipped to successfully compete for prestigious national merit scholarships, fellowships, and endowments, (e.g., Fulbright, Beinecke, Rhodes, Truman, and / or Marshall), well prepared for admission to top national or international graduate and professional academic programs, and assume important positions in the nonprofit, government, and corporate worlds.

This program will prepare a community of future global leaders by cultivating the importance of teamwork, national and global awareness, critical thinking, and communication skills. Scholars will engage in faculty-mentored research, community service, civic engagement, and other creative projects to enhance their academic experience. The program will help students make the very most of their collegiate experience at the University of Houston in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

An inaugural cohort of 5 students will selected prior to the fall 2021 semester to participate in this program.

What does it include?

CLASS Scholars are high achieving students who will receive an enhanced and intimate Tier-One education with four facets of support:

  • A Renewable Scholarship – Students will receive a renewable scholarship of $2,000 per year. Students selected to be a CLASS Scholar must maintain a GPA of 3.5 to be eligible for this scholarship. Students will receive mentorship and support starting at the beginning of their first year.
  • Global Citizen Credential – The Global Citizen Credential provides students with an opportunity to enhance their degree with a set of core competencies that will equip them to be truly global citizens.
  • Experiential Community Service Learning Support – CLASS scholars will each receive support to assist with community service learning opportunities, which may include the following: special research projects, programmatic development for community-based programs, etc.
  • Faculty Mentors – Each CLASS Scholar will work closely with a faculty mentor who will mentor the student cohort in leadership activities and learning opportunities throughout the year. They will assist in designing the experiential theme and guide the students in a culminating experience at year’s end. Faculty mentors will also develop student enrichment activities throughout each semester for CLASS Scholars (e.g., attending cultural events, visiting museums, attending plays and musicals, etc.).
