College Governance

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is committed to the concept of shared governance. Faculty and administration are mutually interested in the welfare of the college, and they share in oversight of many aspects of college life.
Standing Committees of the College:
Faculty Governance and Advisory Committee
- One representative from each department or school, serving two-year terms
- Chair, Karen Stokes, Theatre & Dance
Grievance Committee
- Seven tenured faculty members, elected by the whole CLASS faculty, serving two-year terms
- Chair: elected from the current membership
Promotion and Tenure Committee
- Nine members, chosen on rotating basis from the departments and schools, serving two-year terms

Undergraduate Studies Committee
- One representative from each department or school

Ad Hoc Committees
Committee on Collaboration and Interdisciplinarity
In the fall of 2010, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Dean John Roberts established the Ad Hoc Committee on Collaboration and Disciplinarity to address today's complex cultural, social and political questions and how they are impacting the University of Houston campus. View the release

Committee on Diversity
- Chairperson: Elizabeth Gregory, director of the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program
The committee’s charge will be to initially review the data on ethnic, gender, and racial diversity and retention of faculty, staff, and students in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Additionally it will be expected to use the review of data to develop recommendations for enhancing the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students who contribute to the diversity of the College, especially in areas of underrepresentation.
