What inspired your career interest?
I love movies, and like many people, I have been watching them since I was a child. However, as a child I was different. I wanted to know how they did the cool things I saw on screen. My mother bought Jurassic Park and The Lost World Jurassic Park on VHS both having an extra behind the scenes featurette. My friends thought they were boring, but I loved it! Fast forward to my sophomore year in college, I was informed that Colin Powell was coming to U of H. I was so excited! However, to my surprise, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to former Secretary of State Colin Powell was present at UH to discuss U.S. - Iranian Relations in the 21st Century. I attended the discussion with the hopes of broadening my horizons and learning more about the U.S. and foreign affairs, but something happened that I did not expect. Colonel Wilkerson said, “movies are very powerful”. The discussion topic moved from talks about foreign affairs to an emphasis on the importance of movies as it relates to politics. At that moment, my calling was solidified. I knew from that day the movie industry would be a very fulfilling venture for me.
What would be your dream job?…to become a Hollywood Movie Director!
Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the Center for Student Empowerment (CSE)?
We went to Rice University to speak to incoming freshmen about the college experience. While interacting with students, it was nice to know I could provide insight and words of caution that many new college students may not hear often.
How did CSE experience prepare you for your future?
CSE provided opportunities for me to see that any academic or professional goal I set for myself is within reach. I know it’s possible. For example, it was Dr. Jones that advised me to apply and go to the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. I did not think I would be selected to attend, but after applying the next thing you know I was at the largest and most prestigious film festival in the world making a short film. So there you have it. Anything is possible!
What would you say to someone considering applying to CSE?
Do it! Go for it! The CSE staff care for students and everyone who comes through the office doors. Even today, a year after graduating, I still stop by the CSE office from time to time knowing that I can receive sound advice related to my academic career.
