Ombudsperson Information

The UH Graduate School has an Ombudsperson for Graduate and Professional Students. The Ombudsperson provides a safe setting for graduate and professional students to confidentially raise and discuss their concerns about workplace and academic issues, address interpersonal difficulties, and receive assistance in identifying options for resolving the conflicts and concerns.

What an Ombudsperson Does

  • Provides a confidential forum for raising issues and expressing concerns.
  • Listens without judgement and offers impartial feedback.
  • Assists the graduate/professional student in exploring options to address concerns.
  • Identifies and refers the graduate/professional student to resources for addressing problems and concerns.
  • Clarifies policies and procedures that apply to the graduate/professional student’s problem or issue.
  • Provides coaching on effective communication for difficult conversations.
  • Analyzes and reports trends in complaints and concerns, and provides recommendations for institutional improvements.
  • Promotes highest standards of university governance and a supportive, ethical and healthy organizational culture.

UH Ombudsperson - Funda Suhin, Ph.D.
Dr. Suhin is an associate professor of supply chain management. Her teaching and research interests are in operations and supply chain management. She is passionate about the UH community and student well-being. Over her career, she has worked with graduate students in a wide variety of roles, including teaching graduate courses, directing graduate student research, and coordinating a doctoral program in Bauer College of Business. She has served on numerous committees related to graduate student education and policies, and as a graduate student mentor.

Graduate Research

Are you interested in exploring your options for postdoctoral training and do you anticipate graduation by the summer of 2025? Postdoctoral Research Opportunities in Science (PROS) at Baylor College of Medicine allows you to meet faculty and trainees from multiple labs and learn about their resources in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Baylor will facilitate the matching between you and faculty with aligned interests and provide you with guidance and support throughout the exploration process. View the list of interested faculty and training programs that are currently seeking postdoctoral researchers. Candidates are expected to meet virtually with at least 3 prospective faculty mentors during the month of November.

The brief application process asks for statements about your research experiences, research interests, and career goals, and a CV.

The PROS Virtual Experience will provide each participant the opportunity to:

  • Meet with prospective faculty mentors and current trainees in labs that match your interest
  • Discover the benefits of pursuing biomedical research in the Texas Medical Center
  • View extensive research resources that support greater than $650 million in funded research annually
  • Learn about our career development and postdoc support programs
  • Chat with postdocs about their experiences

  • Anticipate completion of Ph.D. degree by Summer 2025
  • Ph.D. candidate of a U.S. Institution

This service, sponsored by the GCC and its member institutions, provides opportunities for job seekers from GCC member institutions and employers to learn more about each other. The GCC’s mission is to build interdisciplinary collaborative research teams and training programs in the biological sciences that intersect the computational, chemical, mathematical, and physical sciences.

Internships/Fellowships

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements. For each of the three years of support, NSF provides a $37,000 stipend and $16,000 Cost of Education allowance to the graduate degree-granting institution of higher education.

Scholarships

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Taking place during the summer, CLS is part of a U.S. State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.

Languages Offered

  • Open to students at all levels, including beginners: Hindi, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu
  • One-year prior study required: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Russian
  • Two years prior study required: Japanese

Who Can Apply?
Graduate and undergraduate students across all disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, enrolled in an accredited degree-granting program at the time of application, and completed one year of academic study by the beginning of the scholarship.
