UH’s Interim Graduate Grade Policy provides an option for graduate students to opt for a grade of “S” for any letter grade of C- or better during Spring 2020.

Below are the COSC exceptions to any department-specific requirements and policies, and are applicable only to Spring 2020 UH COSC courses.

Admissions Prequisites/Deficiency Course Requirements

  • A grade of "S" in an assigned admissions prerequisite/deficiency course during Spring 2020 will fulfill the prequisite requirement.

M.S. Track Requirements

  • A grade of “S” in a track course during Spring 2020 will apply towards the M.S. track requirements and will not impact your M.S. track GPA

Ph.D. Core Course Requirements

  • A grade of “S” in a core course during Spring 2020 will apply towards the Ph.D. core course requirement and will not impact your Ph.D. core course GPA.

Graduate Courses and Descriptions

Graduate Course Policies

  • COSC 6305, 6306, 6308, 6309, 6310 are graduate admissions prerequisite / deficiency courses for computer science graduate students only who are required to complete the course(s) as outlined in their admissions offer or first semester prerequisite check. These courses cannot be applied towards any graduate degree. However, the grades do affect a student's GPA as well as the low grade (C+) rule.
  • Some courses listed in the Graduate Catalog are not offered on a regular basis. Consult previous semester course offerings to get an idea of what courses might be offered in a future semester.
  • COSC graduate students can enroll in a maximum of 6 hours of non-COSC courses and use towards the degree provided it is related to the discipline and has approval from the COSC director of graduate studies via a Graduate & Professional Student Petition prior to completing the course.
  • Non-COSC graduate students are permitted to enroll in a maximum of 6 hours total of COSC graduate courses during a graduate program.
  • Being on the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment in the course. Be sure to have a backup.

Grievance Procedures

Below outlines the procedure for redress of a student grievance concerning academic and instructional* matters.

* Because assigning a grade or evaluating a student’s academic performance involves the faculty’s professional judgment and is an integral part of the faculty’s teaching responsibilities, disagreement with an instructor concerning a grade or evaluation is not a justifiable grievance under this policy. In cases where such is in question, the faculty member shall be responsible for the assignment of grades.

  1. Informal Procedure: Students should first contact the instructor or individual with the appropriate concern. Every effort shall be made to resolve the issue between the student and instructor through this informal procedure. If the issue is not resolved through this process, the student may begin the formal department grievance process.
  2. Formal Department Grievance Procedure: A student with a justifiable grievance that can be substantiated should initiate the formal department grievance process during the academic term when the concern arises or within 90 calendar days of the posting of final grades for the course, regardless of the student’s enrollment status. To initiate this process and for additional details, please visit the COSC Department Grievance Procedures page.
  3. Formal College Grievance Procedure: students not satisfied with the outcome of the department decision may appeal to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM). Details of the NSM procedures can be found in the Graduate section of the NSM website.
