About our CHW Course

Our University of Houston Community Health Worker training course is a 160 hour Texas State Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS) approved course. During our course, all CHW students work together on developing a project that is focused on a specific health issue and targets a specific population in the Greater Houston area.

Throughout the course, students learn to develop logic models, learn about social determinants of health, motivational interviewing, program evaluation, and other community health topics.

The course is $1,000 total but there are full tuition waivers available for UH-Main undergraduate students and community members from targeted communities where we have received funding. There are also partial tuition waivers available for students that may financially qualify. Please contact us for more information about scholarships.

The course aligns the University's calendar and classes are provided in spring and fall semesters. Classes have been delivered face-to-face. Now live classes online are available. Both, face-to-face and online, sessions meet on Fridays.

The next course is scheduled for Spring 2021, the week of January 29th, 2021.

When are classes held?

The class is typically every Friday. Classes are all day (8 hours total) and are composed of lecture time and activities.

Will I have to do work outside of class lecture time?

Yes! After each class, you will have about 2 hours of homework and will need to work on your group project. All of the time that you spend inside and outside class will add up to the 160 hours required by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services for certification.
