CUIN Alumna Mayra Miranda Receives Rookie Teacher of the Year Award

Mayra MirandaTeaching & Learning alumna Mayra Miranda has been named one of the eight recipients for the 2016 Rookie Teacher of the Year Award from Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD).  Miranda teaches sixth-grade science at Baines Middle School.  This means Miranda will also be eligible for the 2016 Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) Rookie Teacher of the Year.

"To receive this award not only brings me happiness and joy, it also represents an achievement to the beginning of my career," said Miranda. "This award demonstrates that hard works pays off and doing something you love just makes it a slight easier."

When asked which University of Houston, College of Education (UH COE) professors inspired her the most, Miranda said it was Department of Curriculum & Instruction professor John Ramsey.  "He gave us valuable resources and provided us with a lot of opportunities to learn and grow," she said.  "He showed me how a boring lesson can be turned into a very engaging, meaningful, and fun lesson for the students."

Ramsey was impressed with Miranda during her time at UH COE.  “Ms. Miranda's charming smile could disarm feisty middle schoolers,” said Ramsey, “and her instructional competence would lead them to knowledge they did not anticipate.”

Voted on by their peers, FBISD named 75 Teachers of the Year based on their ability to inspire, equip and prepare students for futures beyond what they can imagine.  All Campus Teachers of the Year, along with the District Finalists and District Rookie Teachers of the Year, will be honored at the District’s annual Teacher of the Year Banquet.
