COE Undergraduate Students Took the Fright Out of Interning

Guadalupe Palos and a StudentWednesday, October 28th, the “Take the Fright Out of Interning” information session was held with the light hearted theme of Halloween for Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) and Health majors.  Just under 40 students gathered in the KIVA to learn what they should expect before enrolling in their internship class.

The idea of this event was formulated by advisor Adrian McClain.  She worked with fellow advisors, professors, Office of Undergraduate Studies interns and others to bring the idea to fruition.

The Manager for the Survivorship Clinic Research Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Guadalupe Palos and two current interns provided some insight on their experience.  “It’s a mutual and beneficial experience,” said Palos. “We learn from students and students learn from us.  We are developing future leaders in healthcare.”

Many topics of an internship placement were covered, such as, understanding what an internship is and how you can obtain a successful one. Important dates for mandatory meetings and potential sites were given as resources for students to use. During the event, students were able to interact with MD Anderson interns who touched on policies and procedures for their site.

“I liked how the presenters explained the internship requirements,” said HDFS undergraduate student Victoria Warmuth. “It outlined what we have to do before the internship and what to expect from the experience.”

Jordan Aguliar and Victoria WarmuthLecturer and internship instructor, Janeen Antonelli was present to field questions from the students.  “I liked that the internship instructor was present to answer questions,” said HDFS undergraduate student Jordon Aguilar.

Students who attended were given information about the University of Houston Fall internship fair along with a broad list of potential sites who have agreed to work with University of Houston interns.

Take the Fright out of Interning was a very fun informative information session," said McClain. "I hope we can continue to provide these session for our students by our students."

Overall, the turn out of the event was a success! The students gave a lot of great feedback and we encourage more students to attend next year!

Also, a big thank you for the generosity of our sponsors, McAllister’s Deli, Michaels Cookie Jar, Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut, for providing a great service to us!
