The College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences gives out teaching excellence awards in two categories each year, Humanities and Social Sciences. The awards are named to honor the memory of one of the University of Houston’s most inspiring teachers, Ross M. Lence, a professor of political science from 1971 – 2006. This year’s winners were Dr. David Walsh, Clinical Assistant Professor of Health and Human Performance and Dr. Irene Guenther, Instructional Assistant Professor of History in the Honors College.

Dr. David Walsh

The Ross M. Lence Award in the Social Sciences goes to Dr. David Walsh, Clinical Assistant Professor of Health and Human Performance.

”Dr. Walsh takes a student-centered approach to his classes,” says Dr. Michael Cottingham, assistant professor of Health and Human Performance. ”His efforts start before the semester and go until after his students graduate. He takes the time to know their stories; he listens to their concerns; he makes sure their voices are heard. He validates students, and they appreciate it.”

Dr. Irene Guenther

The Ross M. Lence Award in the Humanities goes to Dr. Irene Guenther, Instructional Assistant Professor department of History.

”She has a rare combination of pedagogical commitment, passion and wide range in her topic, and personal stamina; these three virtues make her one of the most effective teachers I have ever seen over an extended period of time,” says Dr. Richard Armstrong, associate professor of classical studies.

CLASS congratulates the 2017 winners on a job well done!
