The University of Houston welcomed a new dining establishment to campus with the official opening of What It Do BBQ this spring semester.
“We’ve been getting positive feedback during the soft opening week, and everyone seems to appreciate the food,” said What It Do BBQ Chef Kennis Williams.
The restaurant serves standard barbecue items such as brisket, baked potatoes, pulled pork, slow-smoked turkey, and wings. What It Do BBQ is located at TDECU Stadium along Cullen Boulevard, across from the Science and Engineering Research Center.
“For a long time, there were limited food options on this side of campus. This new addition increases the variety available,” said DaNesha Allen, Director at Auxiliary Services.
Omar Yusuf, a UH alumnus and one of the owners, stated that the Grand Opening was successful, building on the achievements of their soft opening.
“It’s unique having a barbecue establishment at UH, providing a different option compared to other concepts on campus,” said Yusuf. “Our restaurant offers students quality food at competitive prices.”
At the Grand Opening, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed the barbecue and shared positive feedback afterwards.
Computer Science freshman Jarod Conde, who doesn’t frequently eat barbecue, enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich and rated it highly.
“I eat barbecue quite often,” said Mechanical Engineering freshman Tuam Pham. “I give it an eight or nine out of ten.”
Conde and Pham appreciated the portion size and value. Biomedical sophomore Kailey Jirsa, Sports Media senior Ashton Grissom, and Biomedical junior Morgan Harper echoed these sentiments.
“I’m glad there’s a new cuisine option for game days,” said Harper.
Grissom mentioned he liked the non-fried options that What It Do BBQ provides, while Jirsa appreciated that the restaurant accepts Cougar Cash, making it convenient for students.
The location of What It Do BBQ was also noted positively by Grissom, Harper, and Jirsa.
“It feels like UH is responding to student preferences and considering what people might want in a dining option,” said Harper.
What It Do BBQ’s official address is 3874 Holman St. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with hours adjusted for Cougar football season.
“We’ll be ready for tailgate season and prepared to elevate our service,” said Yusuf.
