Grubhub’s Campus Dining Program delivers food options for the University of Houston

GrubHub

This fall, the university rolled out Grubhub as the integrated campus mobile ordering and delivery platform to reduce lines at popular on-campus eateries, streamline residential Meal Exchange ordering, and enable robot delivery from on-campus locations – all in one mobile app.

Grubhub, the food ordering and delivery app, allows students, faculty, and staff to place orders from on-campus eateries such as The Melt Lab, Chik-Fil-A, Panda Express, and new additions via the RAD Center like The Burger Joint, Absurd Bird and Taco Stand. Users have the option to select a pick-up time or have their order delivered via the Starship delivery robots.

Previously, the UH community utilized Boost Mobile Ordering or the Starship apps to place orders from on-campus restaurants. Now, all orders can be placed using Grubhub.

The UH community can also use Grubhub to place orders with local off-campus restaurants and can rest easy knowing that there’s a $0 delivery fee on eligible orders over $18.

When signing up for Grubhub, it’s important to affiliate yourself with the University of Houston as that will allow UH community members to access the benefits of Grubhub’s Campus Dining Program.

While Grubhub’s on-campus program with UH started this fall, the off-campus portion started in August 2023. Former Cougar Card Services Director Rosie Ashley, and current Cougar Card Coordinator Daisy Del Fiero, learned of the program at the 2022 NACCU (National Association of Campus Card) Conference and heard about how well it was performing at other campuses.

At the time, the university was using a different food ordering platform.

“We wanted to try something different, something that could be more beneficial for the students, and maybe more up to date because it’s what the kids are using,

After the conference, Cougar Card Services started the journey that led to the program being implemented in August 2023.

The early returns, 361 signups, while promising, showed less growth than the department expected. To increase awareness through the first year of the program, Cougar Card Services held several tabling events at UH and UH at Sugar Land during student orientations and university events.

A year later, 4,267 UH students, faculty, and staff joined in August alone, with students making more than half of the new signups.

“It’s been a big hit with students and faculty as well,” said Del Fierro.

Students, faculty, and staff can use debit/credit cards, ShastaBUCKS, or Cougar Cash as forms of payment. Students can also use their UH Dining plan by linking their Cougar Card to their Grubhub account. The latter will allow students to pay on-campus restaurants using their Cougar Cash balance at checkout or to order from the Meal Exchange menu.
