American Association of University Women awards publication grant to Dr. Sandra Zalman

Asst. Professor of Art receives prestigious award to complete book on Surrealism and modern art consumption

Sandra Zalman, assistant professor of art, has been awarded a 2014-2015 American Fellowship of $6,000 from the American Association of University Women.

“The AAUW award will support the publication of my book, which examines how the consumption of Surrealism in both the museum and the marketplace influenced the conception of modern art in the U.S., not just in the 1940s but throughout the twentieth century,” said Dr. Zalman.

A specialist in modern and contemporary art, Dr. Zalman’s research develops out of a broad interest in the interplay between high and low forms of the visual, especially as that interaction has shaped the discourses of art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

American Fellowships, AAUW’s oldest and largest funding program, date back to 1888 and support women scholars who are completing doctoral dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research, or finishing research for publication.

For the 2014-15 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million to 244 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls.

They now join the ranks of Nobel Prize winners, celebrated authors, social entrepreneurs, and prominent scholars who have used AAUW funding to advance equality for women and girls.”

Dr. Zalman added, “It is a huge honor to have my project selected by the AAUW. The award will be invaluable in providing support as I finish editing my manuscript and will provide resources to relieve the burden of image copyright expenses so that this book can be published in the most persuasive format possible."
