Spanish Placement and Spanish Heritage Exam

This placement exam is for University of Houston students and serves to assess students' level of mastery.  The exam results are used to determine if students will be placed in SPAN 1501 or SPAN 1502.

  • Notes:
    • Students who have completed two or more years of Spanish in high school within the past 5 years may not apply for credit for SPAN 1501 and 1502 toward degree requirements, and the student must take the Spanish Placement Exam before enrolling in Spanish courses.
    • The placement exam may only be taken once.
    • The placement exam fee is non-refundable.
    • There are two Spanish Language Tests offered at University Testing Services:
      • Spanish Placement Exam: This exam is for students who formally learned Spanish in school but with no previous Spanish language knowledge or background.
      • Spanish Heritage Exam: This exam is for students who grew up in an environment where Spanish was the primary language.
    • The exam you select depends on your answers to the following questions.
    • If you answer yes to any of the following statements you must select the Spanish Heritage Exam.
    • The Spanish Heritage Exam allows you to receive course credit based on your test score.
    • NOTE: Misrepresenting your background in Spanish in terms of living experience or prior academic study is a violation of the University of Houston Academic Honesty Policy (Article 3.01.).
      •  When I was a child, Spanish was spoken in my house.
      • I lived in a Spanish-speaking country for two years or longer.
      • My first language was Spanish (or both Spanish and English).
      • I speak Spanish or both Spanish and English with my family and friends.
      • My parents and/or grandparents often speak to me in Spanish.
