Scott Nyquist, Advisory Board Chairman - Senior Advisor, McKinsey & Company
Scott Nyquist is a senior advisor and former senior partner in the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. He serves energy and industrial companies on matters of strategy, organization, and performance improvement. During his tenure spanning more than 35 years, Nyquist has advised oil and gas companies, power companies/utilities, chemical companies, and mining companies. Additionally, he has counseled private equity and industrial firms that support the energy industry.
He joined McKinsey in 1984 in the firm’s London office and then transferred to Houston in 1998. He served in several leadership roles, including directing McKinsey's European and North American oil and gas practices, and co-leading McKinsey's Global Energy and Materials sector and Sustainability and Resource Productivity practices.
A member of McKinsey’s board of directors, Nyquist participated in McKinsey's review committees for partner performance. He was also on the extended board of the McKinsey Global Institute, which is McKinsey's internally funded think tank. Nyquist has initiated and led numerous published research projects on topics related to energy, sustainability, and the U.S. economy.
He is a member of the Shareholder Committee of Wintershall Dea, Europe’s leading independent gas and oil company and serves as vice chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Energy Transition Initiative. Additionally, he is on the University of Houston Energy Advisory Board, Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business Board of Advisors, the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston Advisory Board, and the Houston Symphony Board of Trustees.
Nyquist graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1980, worked for Exxon Production Research in Houston from 1980-1982, and obtained an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1984.
Scott Anderson, Senior Director, Energy Policy, Oxy
Scott Anderson is the senior director of energy policy at Oxy. Previously, he served as the Environmental Defense Fund's (EDF) point person on policies relating to the land and water impacts of oil and gas development, and to the geological sequestration of carbon dioxide since 2005. Anderson works on a broad array of legislative and regulatory issues and participates in stakeholder groups focused on reducing the environmental footprint of natural gas operations.
Prior to EDF, Anderson spent many years in the oil and gas industry and is the former executive vice president and general counsel of the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association. He was also the long-time secretary of the LIAISON Committee of Cooperating Oil and Gas Associations and was previously a member of the Governing Council of the State Bar of Texas Oil, Gas and Mineral Law Section.
Anderson has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin (Phi Beta Kappa), and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.
Wei Cai, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer, Technip Energies
Wei Cai is the chief technology officer and part of the executive committee at Technip Energies. In this role, Cai manages Technip’s technology portfolio, leads innovation as well as research and development programs, and oversees its technology lines.
Previously, she spent 18 years at General Electric Research, where she held various leadership roles, including executive energy transformation technology leader at GE Research in New York.
Cai, who has 20 years of experience managing industrial technology portfolios and research programs, is passionate about shaping the energy transition.
She has a Ph.D. in material chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cai has also authored numerous journal articles and has filed more than 40 patents.
Hanneke Faber (’92 MBA), CEO, Logitech
Hanneke Faber is the CEO of Logitech since December 2023.
Hanneke has more than 30 years of experience in global business leadership across a variety of consumer, B2B and e-commerce businesses. In that time, she drove growth and significant transformation across multi-billion dollar businesses at three of the world’s leading product companies: Unilever, Ahold Delhaize and Procter & Gamble. Throughout her career, she has focused on innovation across diverse portfolios, fostering a deep connection with end-users in both mature and emerging markets, and she is a world-class sustainability leader.
Hanneke joined Logitech from Unilever where she led their $14 billion Nutrition business as group president. Her responsibility spanned more than 150 countries, and included global brands like Knorr and Hellmann’s, research & development, the B2B Unilever Food Solutions business and a supply chain of about 60 factories and contract manufacturers around the world. Last month, Unilever was elected #1 in the World Benchmarking Alliance’s rating of 350 Food and Agriculture brands for responsible/sustainable business. Hanneke joined Unilever in January 2018 as President Unilever Europe.
SPrior to joining Unilever, Hanneke was the chief commercial officer of global retailer Ahold Delhaize, where she drove omnichannel retail operations and built the company’s e-commerce business into a global top 50 e-commerce player. Prior to Ahold Delhaize, she held various international leadership roles at Procter & Gamble, including vice president and general manager of global Pantene, Head & Shoulders and Herbal Essences; and vice president and general manager of Beauty Care, where she launched the Max Factor brand in China.
Hanneke is a member of the board of directors and audit committee of Tapestry Inc, the parent company of luxury brands Coach, Kate Spade New York, and Stuart Weitzman. Prior to joining Tapestry in 2021, Hanneke served a five-year term on the supervisory board of Bayer AG, the life sciences company.
Hanneke was recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the most influential international women in business, as #23 in the latest ranking issued in 2021.Faber holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Houston, which she attended on a full athletic (diving) scholarship. She was a seven-time Dutch National Champion.
Peter F. Green Ph.D., Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology, Chief Research Officer National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Peter Green is the deputy laboratory director for science and technology and the chief research officer for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
Prior to his appointment at NREL in 2016, Green was the Vincent T. and Gloria M. Gorguze Endowed Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He was also professor of chemical engineering and applied physics within Michigan’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, eventually serving as chair.
After earning his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Cornell in 1985, Green began his career with an 11-year stint at Sandia National Laboratories. Green then joined the University of Texas at Austin as professor of chemical engineering in 1996, where he held the BF Goodrich Endowed Professorship of Materials Engineering.
Green is a former president of the Materials Research Society (MRS), an organization with members from 90 countries. He was elected to the status of fellow of the following professional societies by his peers for his technical contributions: the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry (United Kingdom), the American Association of Arts and Science, and of the MRS.
He serves, and has served, on advisory boards for universities, national academies, and nonprofit (technical) organizations. He is the recipient of the 2022 Distinguished Alumnus award from Cornell’s MSE department and a recipient of the Secretary’s Achievement Award from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Selda Gunsel, President, Shell Global Solutions
Selda Gunsel is the president of Shell Global Solutions (U.S.), the technology arm of Shell U.S. and the global vice president of Shell’s Lubricants, Mobility & Fuels Technology sector. She is responsible for leading a global group of scientists and engineers in driving innovation and technology leadership in product technologies that improve energy efficiency, promote sustainability and enable energy transition to a low carbon future.
Gunsel was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2017 in recognition of her distinguished contributions to engineering, and in 2015, the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) awarded Gunsel the STLE International Award – the highest technical honor awarded by the group. She has garnered numerous other awards throughout her career, including the R&D 100 Innovation Award, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Excellence Award, the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers’ Career Achievement Award and the Business World Energy Leadership Award from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in Turkey.
She has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Istanbul Technical University in Turkey and her master’s degree and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Penn State University. While working in the industry, Gunsel has held sabbatical assignments at Imperial College London and an honorary professorship at Tsinghua University in China.
Gunsel has published extensively in scientific literature and has several patents. She serves on the boards of Center for Houston’s Future, Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST), and the Penn State Research Foundation. She also serves as the executive sponsor of Shell-Prairie View A&M partnership, University of Houston Energy Transition Institute and Louisiana State University’s Energy Innovation Institute.
Marvin E. Odum, President, Shell Oil Company (Retired), Director, Cullen Foundation Board of Directors
Mr. Odum served as Chairman and President of Shell Oil Company from 2008 to 2016 and was Director of the Americas and Executive Committee member of Royal Dutch Shell 2009-2016. While Chairman, he was tasked with establishing and advocating innovative, industry-leading solutions to the challenge of securing safe, secure and sustainable energy sources. Most recently, Mr. Odum served as the Chairman and CEO of TerraLithium and Chairman of AAL LLC, focused on low carbon technology solutions that provide manufacturers a more responsible way to source ultra-pure lithium to support the domestic electrification of the economy. Throughout his career, Mr. Odum has directed a broad portfolio of assets across the energy value chain ranging from traditional oil and gas to biofuels and renewable energy. Post retirement from Shell, he also served as the Chief Recovery Officer for the City of Houston on a voluntary basis after Hurricane Harvey and again for the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Odum is a board member of Europe-based Stena International SA and Stena Drilling Ltd focused primarily on international shipping and offshore drilling, as well as a board member for several energy-related companies. Mr Odum is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Board of Visitors member of MD Anderson Cancer Center and Chairman of the National Development Committee for the University of Houston. He previously served on the boards and/or executive committee of the American Petroleum Institute, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Dean’s Council of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Mr. Odum earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Houston.
Andrey Shulalov, Vice President of Energy Transition, Shell USA
Andrey Shuvalov was named VP, Energy Transition effective May 1, 2023.
Andrey brings over 17 years of experience at Shell with roles in Upstream & Integrated Gas, Projects & Technology, and Strategy & Portfolio. He has worked in Europe, Asia, and several locations across the US. Andrey brings a broad range of technical and commercial skills along with a passion for driving change, helping to increase decision quality and ensuring key projects advance towards value creation as Shell seeks to profitably decarbonize the energy system.
Andrey holds degrees in Geochemistry, Geoscience, and an MBA from the C.T. Bauer College of Business at The University of Houston.
He and his wife, Yulia, are the proud parents of two young children and the family are all excited to call the Houston area home.
Darryl Willis, Corporate Vice President, Energy & Resources Industry – IPS, Microsoft
As Corporate Vice President of the Microsoft’s Energy & Resources Industry, Darryl Willis leads the multi-billion-dollar energy and resources industry business and teams. Willis and his team are responsible for driving digital transformation and empowering customers across power and utilities, oil and gas, and mining sectors. They also help companies thrive, using innovative Microsoft and partner solutions that enable operational efficiency, improve productivity, and uncover new business models, that help accelerate the energy transition while also meeting the world’s growing energy demand.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Willis was vice president of oil, gas and energy at Google Cloud. Previous roles include president and CEO of BP Angola, head of Deepwater Horizon claims and spokesperson for BP, and senior vice president and deputy head of subsurface for BP.
Willis is passionate about empowering customers, partners, governments, and investors to drive the transition to clean energy, while providing equal access to all. He is an advocate for energy start-ups, supporting and fostering innovation in the field to enable next generation leaders to solve for the energy transition. Since joining Microsoft in 2019, Willis has grown the Microsoft Energy & Resources Industry organization to become a global leader in driving digital transformation across the energy sector.
Willis has a master’s degree in business from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, a master’s degree in geology and geophysics from the University of New Orleans, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and literature from Northwestern State University.
