Volunteers Needed for Shasta's Prairie Weeding and Seeding Event

Volunteers are needed for a seeding and weeding event at Shasta’s Prairie from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 15.

Participants will be removing invasive grasses and replenishing the prairie with native flowers. They will also be able to see how far the pocket prairie has progressed since its planting on May 7. To sign up as a volunteer, email the UH Office of Sustainability at gardening@uh.edu.

Located at the green space between the Science & Engineering Classroom building, Science and Research 2 and the UH Science Building, Shasta’s Prairie provides students, faculty, staff and visitors a glimpse of the coastal tallgrass prairie that grows at the UH Coastal Center. It also serves as a living lab for researchers and as a haven for native Texas plants and wildlife.

The prairie was established in a partnership with the Office of Sustainability, the UH Coastal Center and Katy Prairie Conservancy. Other UH partners included the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s DesignLab Houston, Facilities Services and Facilities Planning and Construction.
