Senior Series: The Truth About Communication with Adult Children & Spouses

Senior Series is a series of conversations with local experts focused on the unique and complex housing related issues facing mature homeowners and their families. As we age, the relationship with our offspring evolves. Each generation grapples with their own developmental tasks, ultimately culminating in stronger bonds or gaping chasms. When planning ahead for future care needs, conversations with adult children can be challenging at best. This class is designed to provide insights into how to begin and forward tough conversations, as well as how to create closure when conversations aren’t possible. We will also touch on communicating with our significant others as we age. This program is geared toward older adults and their family members.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, observe and learn about the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, or powdered green tea. This ceremony also includes traditional Japanese sweets, served to balance the bitter taste of the tea. This program is presented by members of the Japan-America Society of Houston and is generously sponsored by the Friends of University Branch Library. No registration required.
AAPI Festival

Storytime with Silambam

First Colony Branch Library is hosting Silambam Houston for an interactive performance. The audience will be introduced to some basic movements, hand gestures and facial expressions used in Indian classical dance. Then, the audience will work with the dancers to build and present a story! The possibilities are endless, and the resulting story is always creative, wild, and so much fun!

Tai-Chi: 16 Basic Movements

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese discipline of meditative movements practiced as a system of exercises. It is a form of martial arts often practiced for defense training, health benefits, and meditation. In this interactive demonstration, members of the USA Tai Chi Academy will present introductory tai chi basics. Participants will learn simple forms of tai chi, which is often practiced for its health benefits and meditation. Discover how focusing on one’s balance can help a variety of issues, including arthritis. Those attending the class are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing. All ages are welcome to attend, but participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
