GLOBE- Global Leaders of Behavioral Health Education

Program Description

The Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston’s Global Leaders of Behavioral Health Education (GLOBE) program is a HRSA-funded behavioral health workforce training program, founded in 2012 by Dr. McClain Sampson. Dr. Amber Mollhagen assumed the role of Principal Investigator in the Fall of 2023.

GLOBE is an interprofessional behavioral health training program that strives to increase the number of social workers delivering behavioral health services to diverse populations in integrated healthcare settings around Harris County. In addition to the course and practicum requirements, he program requires mandatory attendance at 4 workshops and 4 case conferences a year, as well as an end-of-year role play exercise. GLOBE is offered to Clinical-track MSW students and Counseling Psychology PhD students.

Program Benefits

  • Specialized training in common behavioral health treatments such as Motivational Interview and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be entering Clinical Practicum 1 in the 2024-2025 academic year
  2. Must declare as “clinical” and have strong interest in delivering clinical services in integrated healthcare/behavioral health/substance misuse treatment settings
  3. Must complete Clinical Practicum 1 and 2 by August 2025
  4. Have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and maintenance of a 3.5 graduate GPA.
  5. Commit to work with culturally and linguistically diverse populations in a mental or behavioral health capacity, in Harris County, for two years post-graduation.
  6. Bilingual is Preferred but NOT required.
  7. Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen.
  8. Must not be employed by UH (including graduate assistantships)

Why GLOBE?

  • 28% of adults in Harris County live with some form of mental illness, and 63% of them have no insurance and limited access to care. The need for behavioral health professionals in underserved communities remains significant.
  • Students who participated in GLOBE often secure employment in direct service jobs in integrated healthcare and behavioral health settings such as: hospitals, primary care clinics and research projects that deliver mental health counseling and substance abuse prevention.
  • Students who participate in GLOBE report satisfaction with the specialized clinical training, exposure to a broad range of job opportunities and a greater sense of integration between practicum and “real world” trends in clinical practice for mental health, substance abuse and other co-occurring health conditions.

How to Apply

The application process consists of completing a brief online application and submitting a short essay. If selected for the second phase of the application, the student will be interviewed by a panel that will make a decision on the final selection.
