In the Outdoor Adventure program, we offer a variety of educational skill classes to the UH community. Clinics and Workshops focus on teaching the basic skills and techniques one may need while on outdoor adventures.

Adventure Challenges and Workshops

Top Rope

Dates: August 21, 28 | September 4, 11, 18 | October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 | November 6, 13

Times: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Registration Required: Opens August 1, 2024 | Closes before the start of the workshop

Cost: $9 / Member

Location: Climbing Wall

Description:  Participants will learn how to fit a harness, tie knots, load a belay device, manage the slack in a climbing system, and properly communicate while climbing. No experience is necessary.

Lead Climbing

Date: September 25 | October 30 | November 20

Dates: 5:00  - 9:00 p.m.

Registration Closes: The Monday prior clinic date

Cost: $20 / Member

Location: Climbing Wall

Description:  Participants will learn the proper technique required to lead belay and lead climb. Clipping practice is encouraged prior to taking the class.

• Session 1 – 9/6: Top Rope Belay Clinic
 Participants will receive instruction on proper belay technique and become certified to belay at the UH Climbing Wall.
• Session 2 – 9/13: Hold types, usage, & basic positioning
 Participants will be guided through the types of holds used on the wall, how to use them and instruction on basic climbing skills.
• Session 3 – 9/20: Advanced climbing movements
 Building off of the previous session, participants will be taught more advanced climbing movements, and continue to develop their climbing skills.
• Session 4 – 9/27: Mini comp
 Participants will get to compete in a private competition and may receive a prize based on their overall scores.

Times: 11:00 am  - 1:00 p.m.

Cost:  $25 - covers all 4 sessions. 

Location: Climbing Wall

Outdoor Camping skills

• Session 1 – 10/4: Shelter building & useful knots
 Participants will learn how to set up multiple types of shelters using only a tarp and ropes, as well as a variety of knots.
• Session 2 – 10/11: Water Purification
 Participants will learn multiple ways to filter, treat, and purify water whether in the backcountry or stranded during a storm.
• Session 3 – 10/18: Fire Building
 Participants will learn basic campfire safety, be shown a variety of ways to build and light a campfire, and the benefits of each method.
• Session 4 – 10/25: Outdoor Cooking
 Participants will get the opportunity to cook and sample a variety of food using camp stoves, campfires, and other outdoor cooking tools.

Custom Trips

Outdoor Adventure has created custom-designed trips and private programs for many special events. You can request a private workshop for you and your friends to learn more outdoor techniques or your student organization or department can have an Outdoor Adventure plan, organize and even lead your next leadership retreat for your Custom Adventure.
