Learning Outcomes and Competencies

Upon successful completion of this certificate program, students will be able to:
  1. Define Health Coaching and apply the theories and skills of Health Coaching, including the Four Pillars of Health Coaching™, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Emotional Intelligence, Nonviolent Communication (NVC), Self-Determination Theory, Positive Psychology, and Transtheoretical Model (TTM) in peer activities and with community-based practice.
  2. Describe and demonstrate evidence-based techniques to support client-centered discovery, self-efficacy, and autonomy that advance the setting and meeting of goals for belief and behavior changes.
  3. Effectively prepare, plan, and organize the coaching structure, managing time and flow, from first session to termination for individual sessions. 
  4. Apply a whole-person, integrative approach to the coaching process, with attention to issues of inclusion and access, informed by awareness of trauma, and with developed cultural awareness and humility.
  5. Describe the impact of holistic health and healing frameworks, including a core understanding of the physiology of mind/body interactions, on the practice of health coaching. 
  6. Recognize the common signs, symptoms, and conventional medical management of the most prevalent chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemias, and degenerative musculoskeletal disorders.)
  7. Describe evidence-based complementary health care approaches and lifestyle behavior changes that impact health and well-being (e.g., exercise, nutrition, substance use, stress management, sleep, social connection, environmental management.)
  8. Integrate learning from supported ongoing personal development and self-care to inform effective professional practice and role modeling as an integrative health coach. 
  9. Locate and interpret peer-reviewed literature and consumer-oriented sources to inform coaching scenarios in theory and practice.
  10. Demonstrate ability to professionally document coaching sessions and communicate effectively with interprofessional healthcare team members.
  11. Demonstrate standard business and marketing practices, including the utilization of an ‘elevator speech’, a bio sheet and head shot, a coaching agreement, and selective media presentations.
  12. Promote excellence in the coaching profession by maintaining appropriate scope of practice, professional development and ethics as outlined by the National Board of Certified Health and Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWC).
