About the Lecture

The Houston Geological Society, in tandem with the UH Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the UH Geoscience Alumni Association, will be hosting the 16th Annual Robert E. Sheriff Lecture Series on Monday, November 17th at the Westchase Hilton.

This year’s speaker, Tony Doré, will be delivering a talk on The Arctic - A tectonic tour through the last petroleum frontier.  Dr. Doré serves as the Senior Advisor to Exploration Management with Statoil. He obtained his PhD from University College London and joined the petroleum industry in 1977.  He has held senior technical and leadership positions with Statoil for 19 years, including VP of North America 2008-2011, and is currently based in London.  He has worked petroleum provinces all over the world, with emphasis on NW Europe, the Arctic and the Americas.   Tony has published on stratigraphy, NE Atlantic - Arctic evolution, basement reactivation, basin modelling, passive margin structure, hyperextension, exhumed petroleum systems and exploration risk analysis.  He has edited books on basin modelling, resource quantification and passive margins.  He was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Petroleum Geoscience between 2006 and 2009.  Tony was chairman of the Geological Society Petroleum Group 2001-2003, chaired the 2003 Petroleum Geology of NW Europe conference and edited the subsequent proceedings (2005). He is on the advisory boards of several universities and currently holds an Honorary Professorship at Durham University.  His awards include the Petroleum Group Medal (2006), Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010 for services to geology and the AAPG Special Award, 2011.

As free seating is limited to the first 58 students, all current students who are interested in presenting a poster* at this event are encouraged to register as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to hjwalker@uh.edu with the following information:

  • Name
  • Undergraduate/Graduate year
  • Poster Title
  • Attached abstract

 *Poster dimensions are limited to portrait orientation, 35” x 46”.

All poster and abstract submissions should be emailed to hjwalker@uh.edu by no later than 4:00p on Friday, October 3rd.  Any submissions received after this deadline will not be accepted.  Prizes will be awarded for the top judged posters in each of the following categories:

  • Advanced PhD - $1,000.00
  • 2nd year MS/1st year PhD - $750.00
  • Undergraduate/1st year MS - $500.00

Student Poster List for Sheriff Lecture Competition

Provided there are still seats available, all students who will not be presenting posters are invited to register by sending an e-mail with your name, email address, and the words ‘Sheriff Lecture - Attending’ in the subject line tohjwalker@uh.edu beginning Saturday, October 4th. The deadline to register is 5:00p on Friday, October 24th.  Any registration requests received after this deadline will be added to a waiting list.

Any student who registers for the lecture and does not attend without cancelling with me via e-mail prior to the event will be responsible for reimbursing the department their $40 registration fee.
