The Moores School of Music is excited to host Dr. Katherine Lewis, Professor of Viola at Illinois State University, who will be teaching a viola masterclass.
Dr.
Katherine
Lewis
enjoys
a
multi-faceted
career
as
a
professor,
chamber
musician,
solo
performer,
orchestral
musician,
and
pedagogue.
She
is
Professor
of
Viola
at
Illinois
State
University
where
she
also
serves
as
Master
Teacher
and
Director
for
the
ISU
String
Project
and
directs
the
String
Pedagogy
Master’s
program.
She
served
as
Principal
Viola
of
the
Peoria
Symphony
for
over
15
years,
appearing
as
soloist
with
the
orchestra
on
several
occasions.
Heavily
involved
in
service
to
the
profession,
Dr.
Lewis
is
Past-President
of
the
IL
Chapter
of
the
American
String
Teacher’s
Association
and
received
the
2021
ASTA
State
Chapter
Leadership
Award
and
the
2022
Outstanding
Studio
Teacher
Award
from
IL
ASTA.
Through
IL
ASTA,
she
has
worked
to
provide
resources
and
programming
for
string
teachers
and
their
students,
and
she
continues
to
serve
as
an
advocate
for
public
and
private
string
programs
throughout
the
state.
Dr.
Lewis
is
the
recipient
of
numerous
college-wide
awards
and
grants
for
her
teaching
and
research,
including
the
Outstanding
Teaching
and
Research
Awards,
as
well
as
several
University
Research
Grants
and
an
Teaching
Innovations
Grant.
Dr.
Lewis
has
given
recitals,
presentations,
and
master
classes
at
venues
throughout
the
country.
She
is
sought
after
as
a
guest
artist
for
‘Viola
Day’
events
and
has
presented
numerous
times
at
the
American
Viola
Society
Festival,
International
Viola
Society
Conference,
and
ASTA
National
Conference.
Her
former
students
hold
positions
in
major
symphonies,
have
been
accepted
into
top
graduate
programs,
and
hold
teaching
positions
around
the
country.
Dr.
Lewis
holds
degrees
from
Rice
University,
The
Cleveland
Institute
of
Music,
and
Lawrence
University.
