Desk Assistant

Thank you for your interest in joining the Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) team! Below you will find important information regarding the Desk Assistant (DA) position; please read through it all before applying. Our eligibility and application information detail everything you need to know before applying.

DAs are student staff members who work at the 24-hour information desk in the residence halls. General work responsibilities include facilitating the guest check-in/check-out policy, answering the phone and other customer service duties by building relationships, promoting engagement, and leading with an ethic of care.

DA staff are in all the residence halls including Cougar Village I, Cougar Village II, Cougar Place, The Quadrangle, Moody Towers, Bayou Oaks, and University Lofts and the main Housing Office located in Cougar Village II.

Desk Assistant Eligibility

To be eligible for this position you must meet all the following requirements. Failure to meet these requirements will mean immediate disqualification from the selection process:

  1. You must be able to attend Student Staff Training beginning two weeks before classes start in August and one week before classes start in January. No excusals will be granted for new staff during this period.
  2. You must be available for all residence hall openings and closings.
  3. All undergraduates must be enrolled and attending classes with a minimum of 12 units per semester for the period of the appointment. Graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units per semester and must obtain approval for more than 12 units for the period of appointment.
  4. Good academic standing at UH must be demonstrated upon application and maintained throughout appointment. This means that Desk Assistants must have, and maintain, at the beginning and throughout the appointment, the following:
    • A cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
    • A semester grade point average of 2.5.
  5. Be in good standing with Student Housing & Residential Life (SHRL) & the University of Houston (UH) academically, financially, and in conduct.
  6. You are able to pass the pre-employment screening and criminal background check required by this position.

Application Information

  1. July 1, 2024: Desk Assistant applications are available through the housing icon via Access UH.
  2. February 10, 2025: Desk Assistant applications close.
  3. March 1, 2025: Receive an email inviting you to interview for the position or informing you that we are unable to offer you an interview at this time.
  4. March 2, 2025 to March 6, 2025: If you were offered an interview, sign-up for your 30-minute in-person interview date and time (Instructions will be given in your interview invitation email).
  5. Week of March 17, 2025: Individual Interview (30-minute duration). Failure to attend your interview without notification will result in removal from the DA interview and selection process.
  6. April 5, 2025: Receive an email informing you that you have been selected to be a 2025-2026 Desk Assistant or informing you that we are unable to offer you a position at this time.
    • Please Note: If there are vacancies during the 2024-2025 school year, applicants may be asked to interview before March 17th and hired before the 2025-2026 school year.
