Meet the 2024-2025 Elizabeth D. Rockwell Scholars
Izzy Clarke, Master of Philosophy Candidate
Izzy Clark is a Master of Philosophy candidate at the University of Houston. She is a teaching assistant in the Department of Philosophy. A graduate of Dickinson College with an undergraduate degree in political science and government, Clarke previously focused her extracurricular activities on efforts supporting and mentoring young female athletes through the HERA Society. She gained research experience at the U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, where she created and presented work on the ethics of implementation of post-quantum cryptanalysis.
Vincent Fumey-Nassah, Public Policy
Vincent Fumey-Nassah is a junior majoring in public policy with a minor in linguistics. They are passionate about promoting civic engagement through Texas Rising, a voter education organization and Emgage, a local nonprofit supporting political literacy. Fumey-Nassah also completed a national summer fellowship with the Democratic Erosion Consortium, contributing to the expansion of a global incidents database. On campus, they participate in the Horticulture Society and Freedom Collective, an organization supportive of university spaces for Black and Queer individuals, as well as Hobby School programs, including the Civic Houston Internship Program.
Alan Guzman
Alan Guzman is a senior studying political science and journalism. He has a deep passion for public service and recently served as a campaign fellow for Averie Bishop, who is running for Texas House District 112. Guzman previously worked as a Houston City Council aide for Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard for two semesters through the Civic Houston Internship Program. His campus activities include working with Planned Parenthood Generation Action to advocate for reproductive freedom. He has also actively participated in other state and local campaigns.
Gabriela Hamdieh
Gabriela Hamdieh is a senior studying public policy with a minor in human development and family sciences. She has participated in the UH Undergraduate Research Fellowship and Houston Early Research Experience initiatives and was selected as a 2024 Public Policy and International Affairs Program Junior Summer Institute Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University. Hamdieh serves on the Hobby School Undergraduate Advisory Committee and the Next Generation Leadership Academy. Her internship experiences through the Hobby School include the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Economic Development, the Center for Civic and Public Policy Improvement, and the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia.
Winnie Phạm
Winnie Phạm is a junior pursuing a degree in political science with a minor in economics. Originally from Iowa, she recently served as an AmeriCorps member with Iowa Legal Aid and previously with Iowa Democrats and the Iowa Child Advocacy Board. Through the Hobby School Civic Houston Internship Program, she interned with the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Education. On campus, Phạm works as an undergraduate research assistant in the College of Education's Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences department and previously as a healthcare investment analyst for a securities investment-learning program. She plans to pursue graduate school or a Juris Doctorate.
Milan Sam
Milan Sam is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Policy and a Master of Public Policy through a dual degree program. The Next Generation Leadership Academy member has participated in the Civic Houston Internship Program and is a Hobby School Student Advisory Council member and former Harris Fellow in the Harris County Office of County Administration. Sam is a member of the Houston Scholars program in the Honors College and a writer for an academic journal dedicated to addressing political polarization. He is active in numerous campus and community organizations. Sam aspires to become a policy analyst while continuing his commitment to civic engagement.
