Trainings

UH is committed to meeting the needs of our community members in all of our educational efforts. EOS' Electronic Information Resources (EIR) Accessibility Coordinator provides the following trainings, as well as customized trainings upon request. 

Monthly Accessibility Workshop

The EIR Accessibility Coordinator conducts monthly workshops for community members interested in learning the basics of increasing digital accessibility at UH. No registration is required. However, attendees will need to bring their own electronic devices. Virtual attendance is also available upon request. 

  • Location: Equal Opportunity Services Conference Room (Student Service Center Building 2, Room 160)
  • Date: Last Wednesday of every month
  • Time: 2:00-3:00 p.m.
One-on-One Sessions

One-on-one training sessions are offered upon request. Community members may schedule an hour with the EIR Accessibility Coordinator to focus on a specific accessibility-related topic. When possible, in-person meetings are preferred.

Custom Trainings and Presentations

Community members may request customized trainings or presentations for their departments. The EIR Accessibility Coordinator will tailor the format and delivery to meet your needs.

What is Blackboard Ally?

Blackboard Ally is an award-winning accessibility solution that integrates seamlessly with Blackboard and helps make digital course content more accessible for all students. 
 
Blackboard Ally scans files uploaded into Blackboard and searches for common accessibility issues. With Blackboard Ally, students are able to download alternative accessible file formats such as HTML, Audio, and Electronic Braille. Providing students with more accessible content allows students to choose the format that works best for them.
 
Blackboard Ally provides faculty with detailed feedback and support. Through Blackboard Ally, instructors can learn more about accessibility issues, why accessibility matters, and how to manage issues as they arise. In addition, Blackboard Ally provides guidance and tips for lasting improvements to content accessibility.

With Blackboard Ally, ensuring and providing an accessible learning experience is now easier than ever. This workshop covers Blackboard Ally: what it is, what is does, and how to use it. Learn all the features of Ally, the user interface within Blackboard, and how to use the tool to identify and fix accessibility issues with course content.

Accessible Content Micro-Learning Documents

Instruction@UH provides UH instructors with the latest in educational technology and instructional design thinking and showcases the innovative work of UH faculty in these areas. The Accessibility area of the website includes the following.

W3C Web Accessibility Initiative

The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is an initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3C promotes web usability for people with disabilities, and the WAI provides resources for web accessibility and developers and a comprehensive collection of content authored by the organization that created the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Recommended content includes the following. 

Creating Accessible Microsoft Office Documents 

The Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities provides free trainings and tutorials, including a collection of modules on creating accessible Microsoft Office documents. Recommended content includes the following.

VPATs and Vendor Accessibility Documentation

Voluntary Product Accessibility Documents (VPATs) are documents in which vendors detail how their products meet Section 504 accessibility requirements. VPATs from several common vendors are included below.
